Assist the Orientation & Student Success (OSS) team in providing comprehensive support to students enrolled in OSS cohorts at Salt Lake Community College. By helping students navigate their college experience and make progress towards their degree, we aim to ensure that they have a fulfilling and transformative time at SLCC.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Participate as a team member of the Orientations and Student Success office (OSS) by assisting with duties and tasks, including:

  • Attend all the required trainings to stay up-to-date on the latest policies, procedures, and resources available to students

  • Facilitate the orientation of new students to Salt Lake Community College to help them feel comfortable and confident in navigating the campus environment

  • When addressing new students, clearly communicate the various services and resources offered at Salt Lake Community College to help them succeed in their academic journey

  • Assist in event planning and execution to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for students

  • Proactively identify and solve common challenges that new students face in their transition to SLCC

  • Coach students on crucial skills such as time management, financial literacy, and success strategies to help them thrive in college and beyond

  • Foster a respectful and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, and staff

  • Be open to taking on other duties as assigned by the OSS team, as needed

  • Effective communication in explaining complex concepts and information.

  • Currently enrolled at SLCC as an undergraduate student and in good academic standing (i.e., 2.0 GPA or higher).

  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Registered for 9.0 credit for Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Registered for 6.0 credit hours for summer semester.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Effective communication in explaining complex concepts and information.

  • Currently enrolled at SLCC as an undergraduate student and in good academic standing (i.e., 2.0 GPA or higher).

  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Registered for 9.0 credit for Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Registered for 6.0 credit hours for summer semester.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual or Multilingual ability

  • Comfortable in front of groups

  • Warm, personable, and flexible; able to put people at ease

  • Prior enrollment in English 1010 with an earned grade of B or higher

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

As a qualified professional, you must possess the following skills and qualities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for effective interpersonal communication

  • Comprehensive customer service skills to ensure customer satisfaction

  • Capability to deliver presentations to large audiences and provide one-on-one consultations

  • Willingness to travel to various campuses in the Salt Lake valley to conduct workshops/orientations

  • Ability to work with diverse populations

  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments, and community personnel

  • Proficiency in organizing, processing, and applying large amounts of information with accuracy

  • Willingness to learn the requirements of SLCC departments, majors, schools, programs, degree options and College resources and procedures such as application, registration, catalog, and schedule

  • Ability to work under pressure and function independently with integrity under minimal supervision

  • Flexibility to work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends

  • Knowledge of basic computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and the student information system (Banner)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and maintain good working relationships across the College

  • Capability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Special Instructions

Work-study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work-Study program, which requires establishing financialneed through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office. If you do not have work-study awarded to you, you will not be eligible for work under work-study positions
