The Broward County Board of County Commissioners Transportation Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Skilled Trades Supervisor in the Bus Maintenance Section.

The Skilled Trades Supervisor in the Bus Maintenance Section assigns and coordinates the work of bus maintenance staff performing a variety of journey-level diesel and related transit vehicle maintenance and repair work.

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to oversee the construction, renovation and maintenance of a skilled tradesman crew. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires four (4) years of journey level experience in diesel or heavy equipment maintenance and repair including one (1) year of lead work/supervisory experience.

Necessary Requirements:

  • Ability to work shift work in a 24/7 operation as assigned (days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays).

  • Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required:

Must obtain a Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement within ninety (90) days of employment based on area of assignment.

Preferences:

  • OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178 Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklift Compliance)
  • 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F (608) Federal License for Handling Refrigerants
  • 2 or more ASE Certifications (e.g. A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8)
  • EPA Section 609 Certification
  • Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC)
  • Broward County Transportation Leadership Program (TLP) Graduate
  • 1 or more years Maintenance Management Software experience (Asset Works or comparable)
  • 1 or more years  Transit Bus
  • Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning
  • 1 or more years  Electrical/Electronic Systems; Transit Bus
  • Diesel Engines
  • 1 or more years  Time & Attendance Software experience (Kronos or comparable)

  • 1 or more years  experience in a union environment/union negotiation

  • Automotive Technology Certification

  • Associate Degree or higher  in a field of study related to area of assignment

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Prioritizes staff assignments, plans and implements work projects and methods; determines application procedure and oversees the purchasing of all materials, submits requisition forms and specifications for supplies and materials; determines what new equipment should be purchased as well as what equipment is needed for various projects; performs and oversees equipment maintenance and planning for support of heavy equipment as needed.

Determines if safety hazards exist and implements necessary corrections; inspects buildings and grounds for various needed repairs and maintenance.

Plans, assigns and supervises trades staff, equipment operators and maintenance personnel engaged in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, lawn cutting, natural area maintenance and repair and/or preventive maintenance of equipment and vehicles, etc.; inspects jobs in progress as well as completed jobs and assignments.

Oversees requisition of parts and supplies, checks and orders stock and repair parts; manages heavy equipment fleet; repairs, replaces, diagnoses, and troubleshoots related equipment and machinery.

Consults and assists other agencies within Broward County.

Assumes the duties of superior when needed.

Handles personnel issues regarding attendance, hiring and progressive discipline, payroll functions, various reports, filing, staff meetings, purchase tracking and recording approvals of requests as needed; monitors assigned budget, as applicable.

Inputs data and work logs into computer; communicates with peers and upper management on any maintenance issues; attends relevant meetings.

Performs related work as assigned.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 25 pounds or more (depending on area of assignment)     of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
