The Purpose  

The purpose is providing quality instruction for all students enrolled in their assigned classes in compliance with Blue Ridge Community College's "Open Door" policy. The ultimate goal is meeting the occupational and general educational needs of the students. Classes may include curriculum, continuing education, workforce training, or other courses, and may be scheduled during day, evening, or weekend.  Areas of instruction will prepare junior and senior level high school students as well as adult learners to apply technical knowledge and skills in respective areas of discipline.

Working together, no elevation is too high, and no summit is unreachable.   What You'll be Doing    

Instruction and Classroom Management

  • Prepare adequately for all classes assigned, and conduct all classes in a professional manner

  • Establish and conduct working lab conditions that mirror a fully functioning Skilled Trade - Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing or HVAC facility. Classes and Labs must operate according to NCCER standards and comply with appropriate OSHA and EPA regulations.

  • Establish and follow all course syllabi guidelines for the curriculum for the grading process, class content, on-line class instruction, class hours, attendance and NCCER tasks taught.

  • Responsible for lab cleanliness during and after session and ensuring that all equipment is in working order after each lab session

  • Providing an orderly, clean, safe working environment, while ensuring that all related equipment is maintained within budget constraints.

Curriculum Planning and Support

  • Maintain annual program assessment; revise annually as results indicate.

  • Ongoing review (continuous improvement) of program courses. Update course content as necessary.

  • Develop, maintain and record student learning outcomes for courses and associated program(s)

  • Develop and carry out a student testing program in all classes taught that meets College policy and standards.

  • Maintain the National Career for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) certified program for secondary level education.

  • Schedule courses with approval of the area Dean/ Director to ensure students can progress through the program in an orderly and timely sequence.

  • Coordinate high school courses and schedules with Henderson County Public Schools High School Counselors .

  • Maintain accurate records and reports and submit these in a timely manner to the appropriate person.

  • Mentor adjunct faculty as appropriate by sharing information, advice, and materials

Student Engagement

  • Advise and register students while demonstrating genuine interest for the general welfare of all students.

  • Promote and implement program recruitment and retention strategies for high school students and adults.

  • Provide necessary student support for and referrals to the College's educational support programs and functions.

Professionalism and Partnerships

  • Maintain a professional attitude toward teaching and stakeholder relationships.

  • Partner with local businesses for better understanding of their applicable needs, then transferring those needs into the program curriculum.

Competencies and Other Expectations

  • Maintain the technical competencies necessary to the job function.

  • Ensure compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures of the College, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies.

  • All work performed by students, other than lab assignments, must have prior approval. Under no circumstances will live work be accepted from the public.

Additionally

  • Responsibilities encompass all classes assigned, committees assigned, or other activities agreed 

  • upon between faculty members and administration.

  • May be required to attend training, workshops, or attend meetings during regular day-time hours to attain or maintain teaching skills and soft skills necessary to maintain professional relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members.

  • Maintain or develop excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to organize and prioritize work flow, the ability to meet deadlines, and the ability to work independently.

  • Orientate and maintain a SkillsUSA chapter as Skilled Trade - (Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing or HVAC) program advisor.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Education

Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: Associate Degree in related discipline; plus recognized industry credentials

Experience

All persons must provide verifiable and relevant professional experience in a work-place  setting or demonstrated instructional/teaching environment.  Industry experience in Skilled Trade - (Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing or HVAC) with a minimum of eight years' industry technician related experience.  Previous college teaching experience preferred.

Skills and the Know-How 

Current knowledge in the field. Possess strong personal and professional  integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety. Proficiency using  Microsoft Office Suite or similar products, Content Management Systems (CMS), College email and  website, web-based computer applications associated with the position.  Physical Demands 

The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged  standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and  machines.
