Skilled Trades Assistant

RESPONSIBLE TO: Facilities Manager

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative, thinks critically and exercise good judgment.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status.

General Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, learns the practices and procedures of a variety of skilled building and mechanical trades to repair, construct, and maintain Lakewood School District facilities and equipment.

Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. This list is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed.

  • Assists tradesperson as assigned in any of the trade areas; learns the practices and procedures of skilled trade(s).
  • Assists in the installation and repair of facilities/equipment.
  • Obtains necessary tools, equipment, and materials for the assigned tradesperson, as needed.
  • Responsible for area cleanup after jobs are completed.
  • Assists tradesperson in more difficult assignments and may work independently on projects.
  • Operates hand/power tools and equipment.
  • Assists in the evaluation, order, and purchase of materials for specific work orders.
  • Operates various pieces of equipment related to assigned trade/craft.
  • Responsible for the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Assists tradesperson in maintaining appropriate logs and records.
  • Conforms to safety standards, as prescribed.
  • Performs other tasks related to the position, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Position Expectations):

  • Ability to learn the practices and procedures of skilled trade(s).
  • Ability to operate hand/power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to do arithmetical computations.
  • Ability to learn and apply local, state, federal, and national codes, including Universal Building Code (UBC), Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC), Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), etc.
  • Ability to learn to use computers and software applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to learn necessary skills in specific trade areas.
  • Ability to meet predetermined deadlines.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work.
  • Ability to safely move and relocate heavy objects.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to work flexible hours or shifts.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to withstand heights and perform work safely.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees and the public.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.

Other Functions

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, student records, parents, staff and any other school-related issues.
  • Promote a positive image of the District at all times.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Facilities Manager or Superintendent.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Physical Demands

The usual and customary duties require the following physical demands: significant lifting of moderate and heavy weight, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent walking, stooping, kneeling, twisting, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Working around equipment and machinery having moving parts and generating heat and moderate noise.

Work Environment

This job is performed both indoors and outdoors and under conditions with some exposure to injury and/or illness.

Employees in this position are designated essential-as-needed-personnel and as such may be required to work during emergency events, are subject to call to duty, and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advance notice.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) months (July 1st through June 30th). Salary and benefits are determined by the Lakewood Board of Education.
