Department Summary

Facilities Structural Services strives daily to make sure the students, faculty, and staff have safe and well-maintained spaces. Our mission is to keep the buildings on campus aesthetically pleasing inside and out with our professional crew of maintenance staff. We are responsible for all painting, flooring, and general maintenance for the campus educational and general-use buildings. We also provide all signage for the campus, tables and chairs for events, outside welding repair, office furniture relocation, surplus services, and have full cabinet/carpenter shop onsite. Customer service is our priority, and customer satisfaction is our expectation.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for advanced skilled craftwork that involves specialized maintenance work. Duties include installation, maintenance, repair, and service of building systems and require advanced skills in a primary craft and may require limited competency in a secondary craft.

Representative Tasks:

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to the type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of the structure or fixture to be fabricated.

  • Prepares, cuts, and shapes materials, verifying trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter level.

  • Completes specialized maintenance work including installing partitions and cabinet work, laying flooring, fitting and installing window frames, doors, and hardware, and applying paint, varnish, or lacquer to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, equipment, and other structures.

  • Identifies, safely handles, and appropriately disposes of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.

  • Cleans and maintains equipment and work area.

  • Erects various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders, and planks to reach work area surfaces.

  • Operates compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, spray equipment, and other small power equipment.

  • Reports needed equipment and supplies to maintain proper amounts of inventory to perform jobs in a timely manner.

  • Assists other shops from the department in moving services, flooring, painting, welding, sign shop, and roofing as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is considered to be essential personnel, and may require working overtime, which could include nights and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in maintenance/repair or related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and skill in use of standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of general maintenance tasks.

  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of general maintenance.

  • Knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and working drawings.

  • Ability to use basic shop math applications.

  • Ability to locate and identify problems in appropriate building system or equipment and to plan and execute necessary repairs.

  • Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work which includes lifting and crawling, and to remain outdoors in inclement weather.

  • Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to use Tablet and basic computer skills.

  • Use spray guns and accessory equipment.

  • Perform finish painting.

  • Work from a scaffold.

  • Have complete knowledge of paint and sign shop practice and procedure including mixing, blending, and matching of paints, decorative and protective functions of paint and other applied materials, and maintenance and new construction painting.

  • Use paint brushes and do precise freehand sign painting.

  • Use layout tools, spray guns, and painter equipment.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Possession of a valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under University liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain Work vehicle, tools and equipment account for and lock at their end of their shift. Also revised any fluids on work vehicle.

  • Learn knowledge of ADA standards to install items such as Soap dispensers, whiteboards, TVs etc.

  • Assist Senior techs and Lead techs, on daily work orders and projects.

  • Report any repairs needed on buildings walked such as, light bulbs, leaks, stalls, flooring, and ceiling tiles.

  • Submit time or requested time by their end of shift such as vacation, sick, or personal time.

  • Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.

  • Thursday 6:30AM - 5:00PM or Tuesday
