Position Title: Sixth Grade Teacher

Location: Thorne Elementary School

Reports To: Building Principal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree of related subject from an accredited university

  • Valid Michigan Elementary Teaching Certification (K-5 All/K-8 SC)

  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as an Elementary Teacher (preferred)

Primary Purpose:

To create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education in accordance with each student's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Essential Performance Responsibilities Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

A. Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, writing, science, art, health, and other related subjects, to students in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, aligned to the common core state standards and other appropriate learning activities.

B. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter.

C. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

D. Uses a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc.

E. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.

F. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

G. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.

H. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students' progress and interpret the school program.

I. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

J. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

K. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities.

L. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with guidelines.

M. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides; maintains required inventory records.

N. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day.

O. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with state testing program.

P. Participates in curriculum development programs as required.

Q. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

R. Works cooperatively with grade level and building colleagues to assist 6th grade students in the transition from elementary to middle school.

  • Required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

  • Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications.

  • Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.

  • Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; age appropriate activities; concepts of grammar and punctuation; health standards and hazards; keyboarding; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; office methods and procedures

  • Required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.

  • Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.

  • Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize specific, job-related equipment.

  • Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.

  • Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited.

  • Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; establishing effective relationships; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with detailed information/data; and working with frequent interruptions.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds in supplies, which requires bending, stooping and lifting.

  • The employee must sit and stand for long periods of time.

  • The employee must have normal visional and hearing with or without aid.

  • The employee must be able to move about assigned location unaided during the day.

Work Environment:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • The noise level in the work environment will vary and can range from soft to loud. Often the noise level in the work environment will be moderate to loud.

  • The employee is required to interact with students, staff, parents/guardians and occasionally with the public.

  • At times, the employee may be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.

Terms and Conditions of Employment:

  • Ten-month school year

  • Salary to be according to the current contract with Wayne County MEA/NEA
