The sitter is responsible to guard the safety of the assigned patient. The sitter will visually monitor the patient at all times, keep the room clutter free, monitor intake an output per unit standard or physician order and provide activities of daily living including hygiene, feeding and toileting needs.

If used for suicidal patients, the sitter is required to provide a safe environment for the patient including minimizing the risk of self harm. The sitter communicates pertinent information to the nurse assigned to the patient.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities, and seeks opportunities to improve department and inter-department processes.

Serves as a resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care.

Maintains professional behavior at all times

Maintains patient confidentiality

Remains with patient at all times, including transportation, testing and procedures.

Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of staff by keeping the room as risk free as possible.

Takes appropriate measures to ensure the safety of suicidal patients, including the removal of dangerous items from the patient room and the prevention of dangerous items entering the room.

Under direction of nursing staff , assists with provision of care for patients by providing the following patient care activities:

Activities of daily living for patients

Turns and repositions the patient as directed



Serving meal tray after confirming diet orders

Picking up meal tray, and assists with maintaining room general cleanliness

Informs nursing staff of intake and output so that it may be recorded on I & O sheet in patient's room.

Notifies nursing station if unable to report to patient room in a timely manner.

Perform special assignments as needed/requested.

Performs responsibilities consistent with the needs of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

Seek opportunities to improve department and inter-department processes.

Minimum Position Requirements :

  • Education: NA

  • Certifications: BLS (AHA) Preferred

  • Experience: Patient Care/C.N.A. experience preferred.

  • Special Qualifications:
    Ability to communicate effectively with patients of all populations and patients with behavioral disorders.

Degree of Supervision Required: Involves supervision, general guidance and directions by licensed vocational nurses, registered nurse, charge nurse, manager or director. The sitter will be expected to perform most job duties independently, and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Patient Population Served: This position requires knowledge of growth and developmental needs of patients.

Employees in this position must recognize and respond to the behaviors of patients in adolescent, adult, and geriatric age categories. The employee must be able to demonstrate the special skills required to care for patients and their families according to Medical Center of Lewisville expectations and standards. The skills and knowledge need to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience.
