Sitka, Alaska AmeriCorps Program Trauma Informed Service

Sitka, Alaska (AK) is an isolated rural community is in need of support to counteract the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic learning loss and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The Sitka AmeriCorps Program (SAP) oversees a consortium of 15 to 20 partner host-sites. In our interconnected community nonprofit organizations and schools are the backbone, building the resilience strategies necessary to combat the pandemic and ACEs.

Our partner sites often lack the resources and organizational infrastructure to effectively address community needs and could not manage an AmeriCorps program. The Sitka School District (SSD), nonprofit sector, and community of Sitka all rely on the ripple effect created through the SAP to extend their services. The SAP supports youth K-12.

We do this through a trauma-informed program design and use a range of developmental relationship and enrichment interventions. The AmeriCorps members serving in the school district are embedded within the schools in a way that is unique and provides a nurturing role model for at risk youth that affects their lives in a meaningful way. Duties: Responsible for academic or mental health supports to identified students during the school day. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : Research shows that high-quality relationships are essential to young peoples thriving. A finding is that children who end up doing well and build resilience despite having experienced ACEs have had at least one stable relationship.

Relationships are developmental when they help young people: 1) discover who they are; 2) develop abilities to shape their own lives; and 3) learn how to engage with and contribute to the world around them. 5 critical elements to success that our program is designed to deliver: 1) express care; 2) challenge growth; 3) provide support; 4) share power; and 5) expand possibilities. To support these 5 critical elements SAP has members deliver series of relationship-based interventions and enrichment activities designed to build resilience and offset ACEs and COVID-19. We accomplish this through a range of strategies that include: 1) academic support; 2) mentoring; 3) mental health and life skills; 4) enrichment activities; and 5) capacity building.
