Salary Range: $30.58 - $34.09/hourly plus a $120/night overnight stipend for weeks spent on-site.

Schedule: 65 days split between in-office work and on-site work

Dates: August 16, 2024 - November 8, 2024

Prep Week:: Sept 16th-27th

Week 1 Sept. 29th-Oct. 4th

Week 2:: Oct. 6th-11th

Week 3:: Oct. 13th-18th

Week 4:: Oct. 20th-25th

Week 5:: Oct. 27th-Nov. 1st

Interview Timeline:

Applications will be accepted until July 16th.

You will know if you have been accepted for an interview by July 23rd.

In-person interviews will be held on July 29th.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Manage the overall Outdoor School program at an Outdoor School site. As the acting site director in an overnight setting, the Site Supervisor is responsible for the development and coaching of program staff, high-level behavior interventions with students, site-wide community development, program management and adherence to MESD board policies. MESD Outdoor School is committed to providing students with an outdoor experience that is culturally responsive, student-centered, and inclusive of every child.

Outdoor School is a program focused on Oregon's youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens, teaching the natural wonders and phenomena of Oregon outdoors. Outdoor School teaches students how nature works to empower students to become engaged scientists and citizens within their communities. High school students provide mentorship and community development and are empowered to become teachers themselves, teaching hands-on immersive science in the field. Competent instructional staff are employed to ensure a rich, 24-hour, living experience where, without interruption, sixth grade students from the classroom to the outdoors where they can study those things best studied outdoors, plants, animals, water and soil. Staff are responsible for facilitating a fun, inclusive, safe and authentic experience for students. You act as a role model, mentor and community leader as they process and experience their week at Outdoor School.

NATURE & SCOPE:

This position is subject to board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department

regulations, and applicable state and federal statutes. This position carries no administrative

authority or responsibility. It carries the supervisory authority necessary to accomplish the

duties and responsibilities that are defined herein.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Implements and differentiates the Outdoor School schedule and program to honor the unique needs of student participants.

  • Supervises and mentors non-certified program staff.

  • Provides training, direction, feedback, verbal and written evaluations to program staff.

  • Maintains communication with the Senior Program Administrator and Supervisor by keeping them informed in a timely manner about problems, issues, and concerns.

  • Conducts orientation visits for students, parents, and District Personnel.

  • Supervises program participants and High School Student Leaders.

  • Supervises and performs food serving functions at meals and at other times as needed.

  • Works cooperatively with site owners and caretakers.

  • Coordinates activities with Cook, Kitchen Assistant, Dishwasher, Nurse, and others as needed.

  • Confers with teachers, principals, and other District Personnel as needed.

  • Communicates with others utilizing inclusive and appropriate verbal and non-verbal interaction.

  • Follows policies of the District and procedures of the Outdoor School program.

  • Attends department and other staff meetings and trainings

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Senior Program Administrator which are indicated to assure the physical and emotional well-being of students.

  • Live on-site Sunday noon to Friday afternoon during program weeks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • The ability to work well individuals with diverse perspectives, values, and identities

  • Dedicated to equity and inclusion while providing youth with authentic outdoor experiences in an educational setting.

  • Can work independently with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment

  • Dedicated to communicating inclusively and collaboratively with students, staff and school personnel.

  • Valid First Aid/CPR card.

  • Valid Oregon Food Handlers card.

  • Valid Driver's License and vehicle available for use on the job.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • One year paid experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational or recreational setting.

  • One year paid experience supervising adults in a professional setting.

  • College coursework or experience in the area of science and/or education.

  • Preferred experience with social-emotional learning, inclusive community development, data collection and/or assessment.

  • Desired TSPC license, though not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed at an overnight camp as well as in an office/school setting. Travel to school and program sites is a requirement. Work is performed in-person.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Mobility: Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move around for extended periods of time.

  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision: Visual acuity to read and interpret written and electronic information.

  • Dexterity: Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate objects, tools, or controls.

  • Hearing/speaking: Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information so others will understand.

  • Emotional/Psychological: Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in challenging situations, remain empathetic and understanding towards individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs, handle stress and pressure effectively, and adapt to change in the workplace.
