Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is an engineering discipline that combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. At Goldman Sachs, SRE is responsible for the availability and reliability of our firm's most critical platform services, and ensures they meet the requirements of our internal and external users. We look for engineers who are motivated to collaborate with our businesses to build and run sustainable production systems, which can evolve and adapt to changes in our fast-paced, global business environment.



  • Balance feature development velocity and reliability with well-defined SLOs

  • Run the Production environment by monitoring availability and taking a holistic view of system health

  • Drive incident management process and support a blameless post-mortems culture

  • Partner with development teams to improve services via rigorous testing and release procedures

  • Participate in system design consulting, platform management, and capacity planning

  • Create sustainable systems and services through automation and uplifts



  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding and / or systems engineering

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: Go, Python, C, C++, Java, Perl, Ruby or shell scripting

  • Experience with algorithms, data structures and software design

  • Experience with UNIX operating systems internals and / or networking


  • Experience with distributed systems design, maintenance, and troubleshooting

  • Hands-on experience with debugging and optimizing code, as well as automation

  • Strong interpersonal skills, drive, and ownership

  • Coding beyond simple scripts

  • Solving novel problems from first principles

Department Overview The men and women of Electric Operations (EO) ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response. The Power Quality Investigation Group resides in the Distribution Control Center Department which is part of Distribution Grid Operations and Electric Distribution Operations. Main function of the department along with the Electric Distribution Control Centers is to keep the lights on. The Power Quality Group deals with power quality issues such as transients, surges, wiring & grounding, harmonics, etc. that may impact the PG&E Distribution System as well as the operation of some of the customer more sensitive equipment. The group is unique since Power Quality Engineers not only have to understand the utility system, but also the customer own distribution system. Power Quality issues can be generated from Transmission or Distribution System, as well as customer own equipment or that of their neighbors. In today complex microelectronics environment, there is a growing need to ensure the quality of electricity supplied to meet the customer loads such as solar, electric vehicles, co-generation, renewables, etc. Position Summary This position is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining. This is a journey-level Power Quality Engineer job that is part of a team which provides services to identify and resolve power quality issues or problems for the safe and effective utilization of electric power. This position requires a moderate level of training, direction and review of work from more senior engineers, peers, and supervisor. Job Responsibilities * Provide core technical expertise to support the company's overall power quality programs and guidelines * Publish and maintain power quality information on Power Quality Website * Provide consultation and support to Estimators, ADE's, DE's and others * Resolves problems of varying scope. Assignments typically require standard solutions. Upon general direction, independently plans work to meet assigned objectives and resolve power quality-related issues. Assignments are regularly reviewed. * Will work with internal engineering, operations, substation, construction and maintenance organizations to implement various aspects of the above job requirements. External contacts are frequent as exchange of information is required to find resolution. * May perform all the functions of an Associate Power Quality Engineer to include assisting internal and external customers to resolve power quality related problems, not including Estimator/ADE or Distribution Engineer job duties. Qualifications Minimum: * BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited curriculum in the US or the equivalent from outside the US * Three (3) years of cumulative experience in the field of Power Quality and/or utility electrical engineering.
