HBO Max is WarnerMedia's direct-to-consumer (DTC) offering debuting in May 2020. With over 10,000 hours of curated premium content anticipated at launch, HBO Max will offer powerhouse programming for everyone in the home, bringing together HBO, a robust slate of new original series, key third-party licensed programs and movies, and fan favorites from WarnerMedia's rich library, including Warner Bros., New Line, DC, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Looney Tunes, and more.

Our DTC Technology team is laying the foundation for HBO Max, and we need highly motivated, uniquely skilled, and technically agile experts across a variety of disciplines to accomplish things that have never been done before.

The Job

We are the team that provides the scalable and resilient infrastructure that underpins streaming services like HBO Go, HBO Now and the future HBO Max enjoyed by millions of customers around the world. We work with Software Engineers to build reliability, performance and security into our streaming products. The team delivers a world class streaming experience to our users and monitors that success by providing real time observability of our services using high performance metric and logging aggregation tools. We champion infrastructure as code and strongly believe that automation is the key to delivering reliable systems.

As an Engineer on WarnerMedia's Site Reliability Engineering team you will design, build, scale and support the infrastructure for our OTT streaming platforms. You will collaborate with the software engineering teams through the SDLC to ensure that we are delivering a world class service to our users by providing highly available and reliable systems. You will strive to apply automation towards the efficiency of our teams and to safeguard our customer experience and will create robust and repeatable processes for the support of our streaming products. You will also help drive the improvement of our observability and telemetry platforms ensuring the highest levels of visibility into our service health.

The Daily

  • Build out the international platform for HBO Max expanding and adapting our existing platform to a global audience

  • Champion best practices and repeatable processes through automation and infrastructure as code

  • Collaborate with world class engineers to deliver ground breaking content and features for the future of streaming media

  • Grow your software and systems engineering skills as you build a reliable and scalable globally distributed streaming platform

  • Develop tools and services that provide real time insight into service and system health for a large distributed system

  • Deftly balance between the architectural requirements for normal day-to-day operations vs unprecedented streaming events such as Game of Thrones

  • Secure our systems and infrastructure to avert disruption and maintain uptime

  • Strive for operational excellence by participating in an on-call rotation as well as contributing to our incident management and blameless post mortem processes

The Essentials

  • 3+ years of experience building and operating application stacks in a cloud environment

  • 1+ years of experience writing tools or API services in languages such as NodeJS, Python or Java

  • Demonstrated experience leveraging Infrastructure As Code tools such as Hashicorp Terraform and configuration management tools such as Ansible

  • Experience in systems engineering and operations, especially for systems that are multi-region or datacenter, and are designed for resiliency and scalability

  • Experience in managing the container lifecycle in a service oriented infrastructure

  • An understanding of how the internet works and operates, particularly in client/server transactions with a keen knowledge of HTTP, DNS, REST, etc.

The Nice to Haves

  • Broad exposure to AWS with experience in architecture, networking and cloud security practices

  • Understanding of the Kubernetes architecture, components and operations

  • Familiarity with automated infrastructure testing using tools such as Serverspec, AWSpec, or Terratest

  • Experience with observability tools such as log aggregation (Splunk/ELK), time series databases (Prometheus/Graphite) and Distributed Tracing

  • Experience creating SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs for web based services
