Job Overview

The R&D Engineering Manager is responsible for providing engineering leadership, oversight and management of the development engineering function. Key tasks include the ability to coordinate project management, engineering design, prototyping development, and leading project and design teams from conception through commercial launch of laser cut / welded components. Additionally, the R&D Engineering Manager will be responsible for managing project costs, and interacting with customers while ensuring full compliance to FDA QSR (21 CFR 820), and applicable ISO 13485 requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership to direct and/or manage product development programs of varying size, scope, and complexity.

  • Oversees New Product Introduction design engineering resources associated with development process. Ensuring creative design solutions for various medical device products involving laser processes including laser welding, cutting, ablation.

  • Effectively engages in customer interactions to win new opportunities and ensure success for existing projects.

  • Able to analyze customer's design specifications and provide input as needed.

  • Establishes accountabilities and manages resources to comply with Business Processes and the Quality Management System as they apply to design engineering.

  • Creates and leads the application of new procedures that drive development engineering activities.

  • Drives continuous improvement to reduce NPI cycle time & improve on-time & on-budget delivery of product development

  • Provides hands-on technical leadership through the product development cycle and recommends design approaches as required

  • Works effectively with multiple diverse technical and business functions, and uses tact and discretion to resolve conflicts and for issue escalation. Displays solid written and verbal communication and presentation skills, and communicates effectively with customers, multiple teams and diverse stakeholders at all levels.

  • Manages direct and indirect staff to achieve defined goals with administrative management responsibility. Translates R&D and business needs into tactical, cost effective, and feasible program /project plans and development strategies; defines diverse technical capabilities and performance requirements.

  • Works in concert with operations management, contributes to the overall strategic direction of the site.

What your background should look like:

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent with 8 or more years of experience. Masters degree preferred.

  • Five or more years of experience with new product engineering design management and people management.

  • Laser technology expertise is a must.

  • Background in medical device development and manufacturing.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks, make decisions, and solve problems independently.

  • Experience in a fast paced environment where 'speed-to-market' is identified as a key performance indicator

  • Must have a 'can-do-it' attitude
