Job Summary
Operate the screed part of asphalt paver and ensure the thickness of asphalt as dispersed from paver by adjusting the height and width of screed and gates. To work as part of a team to produce the highest quality product with an accurate and working knowledge of the screed.
Main Responsibilities
Embrace the Company's safety culture, actively support all safety initiatives, and adhere to defined accountabilities implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
Support, promote, and practice the Company core values, vision, and mission; follow code of ethics, workplace conduct, safety, and other established policies
Supports the Simon safety culture and other Company strategic initiatives
Observes safety procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, and use equipment and materials properly
Ability to run grades on new construction.
Ability to maintain correct depth of asphalt.
Assist foreman - Layout work daily (i.e., use string Line to set grades, edge of pavement).
Ability to lift and bolt extensions.
Ability to adjust screed width using hand or pneumatic tools.
Light burners to heat screed.
Observe distribution of paving material along screed and control direction of screed and gates to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.
Turn valves to regulate temperature of asphalt flowing from hopper when asphalt begins to harden on screed.
Must be capable of performing repetitive motion to adjust screed to provide accurate and quality finished paving product.
Drives company vehicles to worksites and company locations when authorized
Performs other tasks as assigned
Education:
Valid drivers' license with ability to maintain a clean driving history required
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Skills:
2-3 years of related experience and/or training in operation of related equipment preferred
Experience working in and around construction sites.
Basic knowledge of various grade situations and grade ability to acquire accurate drainage.
Ability to carry out detailed instructions and work without direct supervision at all times.
Ability to read and interpret documents, i.e., safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Physical Requirements:
Wears and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
Regularly required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
Regularly required to use hands to move and manipulate objects
Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear)
Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Regularly required to standing and work on feet for long periods
Regularly required to climb on and off equipment and walk across uneven terrain
Regularly required to work from a seated position operating equipment for long periods
Frequent exposure to loud noise
Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration
Regularly exposed to all outdoor weather conditions, dust, and airborne particles
Regularly exposed to fuel, oil, and other chemicals
Occasionally exposed to working from high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock
