Job Summary:
Works with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
Main Responsibilities:
Embrace the Company's safety culture, actively support all safety initiatives, and adhere to defined accountabilities implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
Support, promote, and practice the Company core values, vision, and mission; follow code of ethics, workplace conduct, safety, and other established policies
Safely operates a large excavator.
Ensures trench is excavated to the accurate depth/grade with proper safety sloping or protection.
Responsible for placement of water, storm & sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
Ensures all work is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
Follows directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
Ability to cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating to ensure production is on schedule.
Knowledge of changes in soil conditions and materials that impact operations.
Conducts trench work so that it meets OH&S requirements.
Knowledge of accurate rigging of pipe, utility access hole barrels, etc. and ensures safe work procedures are followed during lowering of materials into the excavation.
Perform minor maintenance to excavation equipment, report problems or defects to mechanic for repair.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Valid drivers' license (ability to maintain a clean driving history required)
Skills:
Two years plus of excavator operator for utility work
Ability to work with others in a professional manner
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and problem-solve
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Physical Requirements:
Wears and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
Regularly required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear)
Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Standing/working on feet for long periods, and walking across uneven terrain
Regularly required to work from a seated position operating equipment for long periods
Frequent exposure to loud noise
Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration
Regularly exposed to all outdoor weather conditions, dust, and airborne particles
Regularly exposed to fuel, oil, and other chemicals
Occasionally exposed to working from high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock
