Signal Technician

STARTING PAY: $18.20 HR

SUMMARY

Perform the more skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, repair of traffic control signal devices. Signal Technicians are expected to work independently on routine assignments; however professional superiors are available to advise and assist on unusual assignments. Employees in this class work as entry level technicians and may supervise Traffic Control Technicians and Utility Workers in portions of construction work. The work is performed under the supervision of the Traffic Signal Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Install and maintain and repair Traffic Signal and Pedestrian indications

• Install and maintain Traffic Signal backplates and mounting materials

• Trouble shoot Traffic Signal Cabinets

• Perform basic wiring of signal heads and pedestrian heads

• Hand program school flasher clocks

• Construction work which includes installation of conduit, pull boxes, pole bases cabinet bases

• Help set Signal poles and mast arms for new intersections

• Perform preventative maintenance on traffic signals including cleaning lubricating or replacing defective parts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent, and a Valid Texas Driver's License, must obtain Work-zone and Traffic Control and IMSA Traffic Signals within 2 years. Must have thorough knowledge of A.C. and D.C. circuitry and be able to trouble shoot A.C. and D.C. circuits using wiring diagrams or schematic prints. Formal trade school training dealing with repair of electronic and electric equipment is preferred or 2 years' experience working in electronic and electrical field.

CONTACT

• This position interacts with other Traffic Employees, some contact with contractors for traffic control, minimal contact with the public and other departments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Ability to use a computer for work processing and spreadsheet purposes.

• Thorough understanding of general office and filing procedures

• Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work

• Ability to lead and supervise the work of Traffic Control Technician

• Ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently on a consistent basis.
