The City of Harrisburg is currently accepting applications for the position of Sign Shop Technician in the Department of Engineering. This position involves the design and production of street signs and other signage used by the City through the operation of a sign printer and laminator.

Work also involves maintaining, cleaning and performing maintenance on assigned equipment and tools and keeping adequate material inventory.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Definition

Work also involves maintaining, cleaning and performing maintenance on assigned equipment and tools and keeping adequate material inventory.

Equipment/Job Location

Work is performed in the Bureau Facility and throughout the City of Harrisburg and may include City Streets and travel to pick up equipment, parts and supplies. Work involves the use of sign printer, laminator, computer, logs, telephone, reports, records, requisitions, purchase orders, manuals, ladders up to 10 feet, catalogs, blue-prints, files, invoices, journals, historical data, and other tools and resources.

Work also involves chemicals and materials such as cleaning solvents, cement, paint and ink and other hazardous or potentially hazardous chemicals and materials; safety equipment such as hard hat, eye protection, ear protection, and other protective devices. Work may be performed in close quarters. The Shop Sign Technician will work in an environment that consists of noise, vibration, fumes, odors, and dust, in certain areas of the work environment, and may be required to work in inclement weather.

Duties typically are performed 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. weekdays. However, employees may work nights, weekends and holidays as required.

Essential Functions

Work involves but is not limited to the following: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and maintenance instructions, blueprints and PennDOT publications.

Manufacture street and other signs according to specifications and timelines established by the manager. Use of hand and power tools and metal fabrication. Perform quality check of work upon project completion.

Assist management in maintaining sign, pavement marking materials, work zone traffic control devices, delineation devices, post and hardware inventories. Monitor all inventories to minimize waste and costs. Work with suppliers to obtain necessary parts and supplies.

Follow established quality standards to prevent rework and missed deadlines. Keep management apprised of existing and anticipated material needs. Review planned orders and projects, calculate material quantities as needed.

Recommend inventory adjustments. Maintain clean work area throughout and at end of work day. Responsible for care and maintenance of assigned equipment and tools.

Conduct field views and communicate sign repair/replacement needs. This position requires extensive walking, standing and other continuous physical activity, such as frequent climbing, balance, reaching, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move more than 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Loading and unloading materials from trucks, possibly with the use of a pallet jack and/or forklift, is required. Maintains safe work environment. Maintains regular, punctual and predictable attendance.

Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs. Establishes and maintains a professional working relationship with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Completes all assignments in an efficient, consistent and timely manner.

Non-Essential Functions

Performs other reasonably related duties in equal or lower classifications as assigned by supervisory personnel. Assists in keeping maintenance records. Performs work as directed by supervisors and in accordance with Article XXIX, Job Classifications, Section 1 of the Basic Labor Agreement.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to read, understand and interpret work orders.

  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and components and ability to locate underground wires with locator.

  • Knowledge of MUTCD and general knowledge of traffic control devices.

  • Experience using a sign post machine and puller.

  • Knowledge of fastening methods.

  • Experience with Pennsylvania One Call.

  • Ability to perform work involving physical dexterity.

  • Ability to adapt to situations involving repetitive duties and stay alert to avoid job related dangers.

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions.

  • Ability to multitask in a schedule-driven environment with the ability to maintain accuracy

  • Experience operating forklift.

  • Working knowledge of computers.

  • Strong math skills (addition, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals) with the ability to calculate figures.

  • Ability to correctly use and read a tape measure.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and unsupervised.

  • Must possess and practice good telephone etiquette.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent. One (1) to three (3) years' experience in the fabrication of signs, graphic design or related field or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Documented experience with SAi FlexiSIGN & PRINT software, CADD Software or other RIP software. Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License, Class C.
