CLASSIFIED PERSONNEL JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Sign Language Support Paraprofessional

Location: Variable Department: Special Services

Reports To: Principal

Terms of Employment:

Part Time X Full Time Hours Per Week 29

Salary Classification P-V, $25.19

Nature and Scope of Job:

To act under the general direction of the Director of Special Programs, Building Principal and the Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing of the assigned school(s). To provide interpreter/tutorial assistance to the students who qualify for services in the Hearing Disability program.

Job Functions

Essential Functions:

1.Assists the hearing disabled student, hearing disability teacher, and/or regular classroom teacher with "in-class" or "pull-out" situations by giving direct translation of information being taught in daily lessons in all areas of the curriculum.

2.Works with students on an individual basis to meet the child's needs to assist them with success in the regular classroom.

3.Assists the hearing disabled student in maintaining the student's achievement standards at the appropriate grade level.

4.Assists with the completion of necessary paperwork in order to be within the compliance of the local rules and regulations, the state rules and regulations, and the federal rules and regulations.

5.Promotes the student's self-esteem through success in daily communication skills.

Other Functions:

1.Follows all school district policies and procedures.

2.Assists with identification activities of students that are coming to the school district with an identified disabling condition in the area of hearing impairment/disability.

3.Assists the hearing disability teacher with the development of teaching materials as necessary to meet the daily needs of identified students.

4.Maintains accurate and complete records that are required by law and school district policy and procedure.

5.Assists, as necessary, with the development of how to accommodate students with staff members to carry out existing educational needs of students in a daily school setting and/or follows through programs when the child is not in school.

6.Performs other duties as assigned by the hearing disability teacher and building principal.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability:

Knowledge of and application procedures on use of personal computers and programs appropriate for elementary reading, math, and language.

Ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.

Ability to enunciate clearly and communicate positively throughout the work day.

Ability to calculate accurately.

Possess visual acuity, aided or unaided, to read and interpret accurately written reports of a technical nature.

Possess the ability to work with various personality types.

Possess sound emotional judgement.

Possess the ability to express oneself through manual communication (sign language,expressive, and receptive) at a level at least greater than the student's ability.

Possess the ability to have receptive manual language skills at the overall level appropriate to the age of the children to be worked with.

Minimum Requirements (Education, License, Certification, Experience or Formal Training):

High School Diploma or equivalent

Educational Sign Language Experience and/or College Classes

Physical Demands:

Possess stamina to remain on feet for periods of as long as 2 full hours without discomfort or excessive fatigue.

Possess stamina to remain seated for periods of as long as 2 hours without discomfort or excessive fatigue.

Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for at least part of each day.

Possess sufficient strength and endurance to project their voice to classrooms for some period of time throughout the work day.

Possess visual acuity, aided or non-aided, to see across a span of 75 feet.

Possess auditory acuity, aided or non-aided, to allow for hearing a normal projected voice in a school setting with accuracy to allow for direct interpretation to the non-hearing student.
