Job Summary
Under direction of special education teacher and teacher for the hearing impaired, interprets/transliterates spoken language using American Sign Language (ASL) or other manual sign system, and vice versa, to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf/hard of hearing individuals.
Qualification/Experience
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Knowledge of educational interpreting, hearing loss, and deaf culture.
Knowledge of American Sign Language. Knowledge of English.
Skilled in interpreting in American Sign Language and manually coded English, including excellent receptive and expressive interpreting skills.
Positive human relations skills. Effective time management skills.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with students and staff in an educational setting.
Demonstration of strong human relations, communication, and organization skills
Demonstration of outstanding oral and written communication skills
Performance Responsibilities
Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English using ASL or other manual sign system.
Provides sign and voice interpreting using American Sign Language, conceptually accurate signed English, or a combination of the two for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Clarifies information for students by restating or paraphrasing the information.
Explains the role and responsibilities of a sign language interpreter to students and staff.
Assists students and staff in effectively accessing interpreting services.
Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student.
Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings (recess, lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as stated in the IEP.
Work collaboratively with the student's educational team.
Assists school personnel in the implementation of classroom accommodations and modifications.
Works with the school team to expand the sign communication skills of students with hearing loss.
Prepare for interpreting assignments including the vocabulary and content knowledge of the subject matter.
Tutor students and make adaptations only under the supervision of the deaf and hard of hearing teacher and certified educators.
Adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel.
Prepare and maintain accurate records, including progress reports as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
PAY AND HOURS:
Placement on the Queen Anne's County Support Unit I Salary Schedule is commensurate with experience and preparation. This is a 10 month position with a minimum of 35 hours per week.
