King County Road Services Division has an excellent opportunity for you to be part of local government! We are looking for a hard-working Sign and Marking Specialist II. Our successful candidate will be a highly motivated team player who has experience installing, maintaining and repairing traffic signs, pavement markings and roadway striping applications for roadways within all of unincorporated King County and contracted Cities and Municipalities. About us (King County Road Services Division)

As the largest division within the Department of Local Services, we are responsible for about 1,500 miles of roads, 182 bridges, and other related infrastructure in the unincorporated areas of King County. At any given time, we have 20-40 active road projects impacting a wide spectrum of communities and people.

Job Duties

  • Apply paint and/or thermoplastic for crosswalks, arrows, legends, channelization islands, stop bars, and lane lines;

  • Install pavement markings such as traffic buttons;

  • Operate and maintain paint machinery including compressors, spray guns, thermoplastic applicators and center-line striping machines;

  • Maintain and update daily log showing activities, make necessary reports on work order inventory system;

  • Keep brush, trees, and other objects clear of traffic signs;

  • Provide proper traffic control by flagging or placing signs, cones, and barricades as appropriate to ensure crew and public safety;

  • Operate jackhammer, air compressor, and common hand tools, in the assembly, repair, and removal of street signs and posts;

  • Dig post-holes and set posts;

  • Lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50-pound bags, tools, equipment, and other objects to complete any of the above-referenced functions;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Experience and Knowledge in driving and maintaining a Road-way Striping Truck.

  • Have experience in sign and marking installation experience OR a combination of skills and experiences;

  • Have knowledge of and will adhere to federal, state and county safety procedures for construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas (fall protection, confined space, hazardous materials);

  • Have effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on collaboration, working as a team with the ability to be an independent thinker who looks for new ways to solve problems and have a continuous improvement mindset;

  • Understand the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and can read maps and drawings;

  • Can prioritize and handle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment;

  • Are comfortable performing work outdoors and in inclement weather;

  • Are skilled in courteously responding to the general public and maintaining effective relationships.

Highly Desirable:

  • CDL Class B with HAZMAT Endorsement

  • This position is represented by Teamsters, Local 174.

  • This recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies for up to 6 months for STT, TLT or Career Service positions.

  • This position is overtime eligible. Working after-hours, weekends, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.

Supplemental Information

Additional Requirements (successful candidates must):

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

  • Have the ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license prior to start date.

  • Possession of a valid Washington State Flagging Certificate, valid CPR and First Aid certifications OR ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Please provide copies of documentation if you have possession of these items.

  • Possession of an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Sign Install Level 1 is highly desired.

  • CDL Class B with HAZMAT Endorsement is highly desired.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The work week is normally Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may at times require work outside of normal business hours. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.
