The Siegrist Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia seeks a Laboratory Technician 1 to help manage day-to-day operations and contribute to the research agenda of the lab. The successful candidate will have prior experience working with genetic model organisms such as Drosophila, zebrafish, or mice.

Experience with microscopy, image analysis, PCR, and/or immunocytochemical techniques is also highly preferred. In addition, the qualified candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.

Duties:

Duties will include monitoring and maintenance of fly stocks, preparation of fly food and other reagents and solutions as instructed, washing/autoclaving glassware and other lab supplies, and maintaining general lab order and cleanliness.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator or senior staff, the Lab Tech 1 will also conduct research experiments, assist with data analysis, write reports, and maintain well organized and detailed logs of experimental data.

The anticipated salary range for the position is $14.00 - $15.00/hr.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.

Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field is preferred. Experience with microscopy, image analysis, PCR, and/or immunocytochemical techniques is also highly preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work accurately with attention to detail is also preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Incumbent interacts with and assists other laboratories with similar techniques.
