SIA - Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)

Spokane International Academy is seeking a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to oversee the academic program for students who qualify for these services. They will work in coordination with our Special Education staff and Director of Special Services. They will also ensure that Spokane International Academy is compliant with all federal, state and local requirements in regards to special education and coordinate relevant professional development for all SIA staff in the areas of the identified needs.

Spokane International Academy is a rigorous K-11th grade international school that empowers all students with the academic skills, essential habits for success and global competence necessary to complete advanced courses in high school and a four-year college degree in order to become leaders who will powerfully transform their communities.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assess and provide individual/small group therapy for students relating to articulation, language, fluency, voice and hearing impairment(s).

  • Identify the needs of students, develop and implement individualized education programs to address identified needs.

  • Relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.

  • Practice the use of appropriate and current instructional skills based on progress monitoring data.

  • Work with students eligible for special education across categories.

  • Function effectively as a member and/or leader of a multidisciplinary assessment team.

  • Work cooperatively with teachers, students, and parents.

  • Work with nonverbal students and augmentative communication system.

  • Understand the essential state/federal requirements for special education programming and procedures.

  • Coordinate with classroom teachers at the building level as appropriate.

  • Train/supervise an instructional aide.

  • Develop, monitor, and maintain appropriate data on specialized instruction for students.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Washington ESA Certificate required, or ability to meet all requirements necessary to obtain ESA.

  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward self-discipline.

  • Ability to communicate clearly, express thoughts concisely and effectively in both written and oral form.

  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperative with others, and adaptable to a variety of assignments and conditions.

  • Prior experience assessing the needs of students, and developing/implementing individualized education programs to meet those needs.

  • Proficient knowledge of appropriate and current instructional skills based on progress monitoring data.

  • Ability to set and attain a high level of expectations and use available resources to promote student success.

  • Capability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in charter schools, public schools, and/or urban education.

  • Ability to communicate in a language(s) other than English.

  • Successful experience in working with students exhibiting a wide range of disabilities.

  • Certificate of Clinical Competency desirable.

  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism in motivating toward teaching and student learning.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with sign language preferred.

  • Prior experience with augmentative communication systems/work with nonverbal students preferred.

  • Previous experience with consultation activities/roles preferred.
