Job Description

Located in Kent Washington, Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace, electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting, passivation, cadmium and nickel zinc plating, chromic, sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies, phenolics, polyurethanes, polyesters, elastomerics, intumescents, lacquers, alkyds, acrylics, dry-film lubricants, powder coatings and Teflon. Current approvals include the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, (NADCAP), Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company, Boeing Defense and Space, Boeing/Philadelphia, Boeing Long Beach, Grumman, Gulfstream, Lockheed Martin, Goodrich, Bombardier, Cessna and Sikorsky among much else.

Founded in 1976, Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012, and became part of the Aerostructures Division. Staffed with approximately 300 employees, the facility generates annual revenues in excess of $26 million. As a defense contractor Protective Coatings Inc. is registered with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls as a subsidiary of Precision Castparts Corp and is fully compliant with all relevant facets of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and the Export Administration Regulations.

Position Summary:

Candidates for a Level 1 Certified Shot Peen Operator will possess the skills and knowledge to perform specific tasks which include manual shot peen operation of aluminum and steel alloys, racking, masking and unmasking, and cleaning of aerospace parts. The Level 1 Certified Shot Peen Operator shall be able to follow the techniques and procedures for which certified, with limited guidance from Level 2 Shot Peen Operator. Candidates must be self-disciplined and self-motivated individuals with strong accountability (attention to details) skills. Candidates must have the ability and desire to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced production environment, be resourceful and innovative along with presenting a strong business ethic and compliance to leadership and company policies, and a good communicator with the ability to represent the company in a positive manner. Additionally, Certified Level 1 Shot Peen Operators shall be knowledgeable in the testing and documentation of certified shot peen equipment, understanding of shot peening standards and characteristics, and other tasks and training assigned by Level 2 Shot Peen Operator for further opportunity in advancing a career in shot peen. As a condition of assignment, Shot Peen Operator Level 1 candidates may be expected to process product controlled under in International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). As such, these candidates may be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship, Legal Permanent Residence or protected status as a Non-Citizen National of the U.S.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and assimilating work instructions relating to racking, cleaning and masking operations.

  • Perform receiving inspections (before processing) as needed and immediately report any damage or discrepancy.

  • Will require use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during certain tasks (goggles, safety glasses, aprons, boots, gloves, hearing protection, etc) and be expected to comply with safety directives and policy.

  • Perform manual shot peen operations using cast steel or hard (cut-wire) shot.

  • Testing and measuring of shot media quality and performance, and documenting results.

  • Perform inspections of surfaces and part features tolerances, post peening operations, to insure compliance to specification, drawing, and/or customer requirements.

  • Gathers supplies such as racks, tooling, baskets, carts (etc).

  • Racking and turning of production parts for shot peening operations.

  • Cleaning of production parts which include degreasing or manual solvent cleaning.

  • Will be exposed to chemicals/solvents and occasional fumes, wet/humid conditions, low-level lighting, and moderate noise level.

  • Will at times require heavy lifting or use of mechanical hoist for the aid in lifting objects.

  • Work closely with inspectors and area leadership to complete work and prioritize tasks.

  • Clean, organize and maintain work area as prescribed by supervision.

  • Complete documentation, counting of production parts, computer scanning, package to protect and transport, and other assigned tasks.

Required Skills:

  • Basic mathematic skills: add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

  • Understanding of basic geometry concepts and applications for effective and complete peening coverage of production parts.

  • Ability to properly use measuring and inspection equipment such as digital scales, feeler gauges, magnifiers, and Almen strip holders.

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods with limited movement.

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to work alone or as a member of a team, good cooperative skills.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English. Specifically, applicants must be able to read and understand written procedures and instructions.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced and ever-changing environment with multiple priorities.

Required Experience:

  • Experience relative 1 to 2 years specific to support functions of the Shot Peen department as a Shot Peen Helper in the entry level position.

Level of Education:

  • General Standard education including the ability to read and write in English.

  • Practical testing for Shot Peen Level 1 status, with a minimum score of 70%.

  • Attend formal training class and require 80% passing grade

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $22.50 to $27.00 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter. Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. This position requires use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls under U.S. export control laws and regulations (including, but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)). To be qualified to work in this facility, a successful applicant must be a U.S. Person, as defined in those regulations, and able to supply evidence of that qualification prior to starting work or be authorized to receive controlled information under a specific license or permission from the relevant government agency. The U.S. export control regulations define a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), and certain categories of Asylees and Refugees.
