About the Department of Conservation and Recreation:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for Adaptive Recreation Assistants to fill the position of seasonal Recreation Facilities Supervisor I.

DCR's Universal Access Program (UAP) offers a unique opportunity for people of all abilities to take part in a wide array of outdoor recreation activities. The UAP Adaptive Recreation Assistants perform safety and supportive duties related to outdoor adaptive recreation opportunities offered by DCR in various parks statewide.

Primary duties are to collect data in parks and on trails regarding accessibility and to assist organized opportunities in which people with disabilities are actively recreating independently in the parks.

Assisting with handling, maintaining and transporting recreation equipment; representing DCR's Universal Access Program in parks, and other related work will be part of the job.

Physical and/or "hands-off" assistance during adaptive recreation programs may be included.

Other duties include the transport of program equipment to and from parks; assessing sites for hazards, and safety related documentation of each program.

During inclement weather or non-field time, Adaptive Recreation Assistants may be expected to assist with general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and facility grounds. Other related work, such as documentation may also be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with people with disabilities and/or are pursuing education in a related field such as outdoor recreation, therapeutic recreation, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, disability studies/services, etc. Previous experience or skill in outdoor recreation is an asset.

Universal Access Program specific training is provided: disability awareness and etiquette, adaptive recreation equipment, fitting and modification methods, operational procedures, safety and risk management, trailer towing.

American Red Cross Certification: Basic Life Support CPR or CPR for the Professional Rescuer or AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION LEVEL C is acceptable. (Community CPR is not accepted.)

Current certification in Standard First Aid, Community First Aid and Safety or First Responder.

Must have a current driver's license and reliable personal transportation.

Selected candidate must be willing to travel statewide.

Must be 18 years of age by the date of hire to work.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: None.

Special Requirements:

I. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

II. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Standard First Aid and Personal Safety Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
