POSITION OVERVIEW:

To provide timely, quality, and cost effective repair and maintenance for vehicle fleet including tractors, trailers, forklifts and other equipment that requires preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, modifications and documentation to ensure a safe and efficient fleet of vehicles.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:
1.Performs preventative and routine maintenance on tractors, trailers, forklifts, and other equipment (which will include the use of diagnostic equipment)
2.Diagnoses cause of malfunctions and performs repairs from preventative maintenance up to component replacements
3.Diagnoses and trouble shoots general vehicle operating systems
4.Documents work performed, prepares vehicle records and reports in writing and electronically
5.Works with other technicians or independently in performing preventative maintenance and repairs
6.Performs necessary adjustments in equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations and prepares required safety documentation
7.Performs paint and body work on vehicles, as required
8.Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
9.Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma (or GED)

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years' experience performing vehicle maintenance; a heavy duty vehicle maintenance certificate obtained from an accredited vehicle maintenance vocational/trade school may substitute for one year vehicle maintenance experience

  • Medium/Heavy Truck Master ASE Certification preferred

  • Class A CDL preferred

  • Brake Inspection Certification eligible

  • Must possess necessary tools to perform assigned tasks

  • Valid driver's license may be required depending on work assignment

  • Computer skills including email, maintenance programs, and diagnostic systems

  • Thorough knowledge of late model gas and diesel engines and on-board computers

  • Experience using oxygen/acetylene equipment (cutting, heating, bending, fabricating equipment during repair)

  • Experience using lifting devices (bottle, floor, wheel, or transmission jacks, floor cranes, etc.)

  • Experience using precision measurement instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, electronic multimeters/testers, A/C charging station, etc.)

  • Able to frequently lift components weighing approximately 110 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance from another person

  • Ability to safely operate vehicles equipped with manual and automatic transmission

  • Ability to enter and exit the driver's compartment of the truck and/or behind cab using normal available footholds and handholds

  • If paint and body work duties required, experience required

  • If forklift repair duties required, prior forklift repair experience required

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training

  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job

  • Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, diesel fumes and noise

  • May be required to drive service van to off-site locations and perform work

  • Exposure to climate conditions of the geographic area

  • Exposure to chemicals, oils, greases, paints or other irritants

WORK SCHEDULE: The current work schedule is 4 days at 10-hours per day. A work week is based on work days during a Sunday – Saturday schedule; weekend day(s) will be part of the work week. JOB SUMMARY: This position performs work of a skilled nature which requires special training, education, and experience. Must have knowledge and skills which approach journeyman level in several trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical maintenance; operates a variety of specialty equipment; makes repairs and adjustments of moderate to high difficulty on the water production and distribution system and the SCADA water control system in accordance with EPA regulations; performs chemical tests and collects water quality samples to assure water purity; operates and maintains lift stations and pumping stations; assignments are received from supervisor but employees in this class are expected to exercise a great deal of judgment in selecting work methods, equipment, material, and planning; operates trucks with snow plows; trains other employees; assumes responsibility for work unit in the absence of a supervisor. Responds to emergency conditions. Develops short- and long- term work schedules; responsible for implementation of the Division's budget and work projections. JOB DUTIES: * All those listed in Maintenance Worker 2 position. * Instructs workers on methods, procedures, and safety requirements used on operation, maintenance, and repair projects. * Monitors and adjusts water system operation to maintain adequate supply. This requires night and weekend SCADA monitoring as assigned. Checks and programs SCADA system for daily operation reports. * Tests and repairs water meters. Maintains and repairs electrical controls. * Collects water samples to determine if water meets IEPA regulations. Analyzes water samples to determine portability and proper chlorine content. * Operates and/or directs the use of division specific equipment in which employee is qualified. Performs minor maintenance and custodial work in the care of Village owned buildings, grounds, and facilities. QUALIFICATIONS: * Education equivalent to a high school diploma. * A minimum of five years of experience in a Public Works Department with a thorough knowledge of skilled maintenance and construction work. * Possession of a valid Class C IEPA Water Operator's Certification (an in-training certificate is not acceptable) is preferred or the requirement to obtain a valid Class D IEPA Water Operator's Certification (an in-training certificate is not acceptable) within two years from date of hire. * Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six months from date of hire. * Proficiency with current computer software systems, including email, calendar programs, job specific software, and customer service systems preferred or within the first six months of employment. Broad and in-depth knowledge of all Engineering & Public Works Department operations. Thorough knowledge of Regulatory Agency rules and regulations including IEPA drinking water rules and regulations. Ability to exercise good judgment and make proper decisions to assure the proper operation of systems. Ability to establish good working relationships. Knowledge and experience in the use of the equipment of the division to train subordinates in the safe use of the equipment. Ability to effectively supervise and work with others and to train all assigned personnel through demonstration and/or effective communication, written or oral. Ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures to the general public as well as to supervisors and staff. Ability to maintain clear and accurate records of all Division operations and prepare clear and concise technical reports. Ability to exercise good judgment and make proper decisions to assure a safe, clean, and adequate water supply. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Subject to high levels of noise for an extended period of time. * Subject to extremes of temperature for prolonged periods or abrupt changes in temperature. * Subject to fumes or disagreeable odors. * Subject to exposure to inclement weather conditions. * Subject to extended periods of isolation. * Subject to working in wet, dirty, dusty, hot humid, and/or cold conditions in high vehicle traffic areas. * Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to lift and move 75 pound or more on a frequent basis. * Frequent and/or prolonged bending, stooping, standing, pulling, pushing, or reaching. * Prolonged periods of concentration such as proof reading, figure work, drawing, reading blue prints, etc. * Frequent contact with the public; must be able to effectively communicate verbally and demonstrate good customer relations. * Frequently completes written technical forms; must be able to effectively communicate in writing. * Occasionally works at heights to 130 feet above or depths of 50 feet below the ground. * Subject to frequently changing walking surfaces. * Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others, including private contractors hired by the Village. * Subject to working for extended periods of time: 12 hours normally and 18 hours infrequently for several consecutive days.
