Shop Service Tech / Driver, Western Sand & Gravel, Ashland, NE

Must be able to work at the Ashland, WS & G facility. Employment offers are contingent on applicant successfully completing a background check, DOT pre-employment physical, back screen and drug screen.

Summary

Responsible for the daily repair, upkeep of plants, equipment and property of Western

Sand & Gravel and provide product/equipment transport when necessary

by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.

Ensures safe and efficient operation of the shop through maintenance, inspection and repair of the equipment and operating conditions of the facilities.

Inspect and diagnose machine technical problems in an accurate and timely manner.

Works in a manufacturing setting that requires welding, torching, cutting, and fabrication on various items for the purpose of building and maintaining the equipment and operating conditions while ensuring safety.

Maintains shop, equipment, tools, vehicle, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required items.

Requests parts, equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.

May transport product or equipment to other plants or affiliated companies &/or pick up product from an affiliated company.

Operates sand and gravel equipment as required for the purpose of supporting completion of work activities.

As needed, use a skid-loader, forklift, and/or loader to work around the plant and dredge.

Responds to emergency situations as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

Assists in performing preventative maintenance on equipment.

Operates plant based on production schedules to assure appropriate sequence of operations.

Keep plant facilities clean and safe for efficient operation. Notify appropriate personnel of any problems.

Maintain appropriate inspection logs. Other duties may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination equivalent to High School diploma or equivalent and three years of responsible metal fabrication experience. A vocational/technical mechanic diploma; or three to six months related mechanic experience and/or training is helpful.

Previous aggregate processing and gravel pit experience would be very helpful. Must have proven mechanical troubleshooting skills. Must have a valid Class A CDL.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend work orders, SDS sheets and the company safety manual. Must be able to read blueprints.

Mathematical Skills:
Must have a good understanding of numbers and measurement.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense and implement sound troubleshooting skills to analyze, evaluate and diagnose a problem. Must be able to distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. Previous commercial truck driving experience is preferred.

Must meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical requirements and carry a physical exam card, which is to be kept current according to DOT guidelines. Must be insurable under the company insurance guidelines.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Must be able to operate with minimal supervision, be a trouble shooter and take initiative to investigate and resolve problems. Must be a self-starter. Must be able to work well with others.

Other Qualifications:

Must have basic working skills and a demonstrated ability in electrical, mechanical and plumbing. Must have a good sense of detail and work to maintain a clean and safe plant environment.

Ability to operate hand tools. Welding and cutting torch skills preferred. Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of small diesel motors and standard motor vehicles.

Must be flexible regarding work assignments. Must demonstrate willingness to perform other support duties during non-busy times. Must be able to work with various hand tools of the trade. Must have good manual dexterity and good motor coordination skills.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Would regularly climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; able to talk, hear, and smell.

The employee is occasionally required to sit. Must be able to use up to 20 pounds of force occasionally. Direct frontal reaching is required while the employee may be required to lift 25 pounds over the head occasionally, must also be able to lift &/or move 70 pounds to waist height.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employees are required to wear protective safety gear and eye protection.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and possible extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; 25% outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees are required to wear protective ear protection. There are some chemical exposures that are part of performing the job. SDS sheets are available in the department.

Plant and field environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and chemicals. Must be able to work a 45 hour shift per week. This is a non-smoking campus.

Condition of Employment:

Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if required) are required as conditions of employment.

Employees work out of the Ashland Shop as a base site. Summer hours are 6 pm to 6 am, 5 days a week. Hours may range from 40 to 60 hours per week from spring to fall.
