Position Function:

Under the direction of the Parks Superintendent, performs duties necessary to support the proper maintenance, service, and repair of all heavy equipment, motorized utility vehicles, and power tools and equipment. Responsible for maintaining maintenance, repair, and replacement logs, as well as ordering parts and tools necessary to complete tasks. Duties may include but are not limited to, welding and metal fabricating.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs duties necessary to support the proper maintenance, service, and repair of all heavy equipment, motorized utility vehicles, and power tools and equipment. Responsible for prioritizing, coordinating, and ensuring efficiency of all daily maintenance, repair, and replacement logs, as well as ordering parts and tools necessary to complete tasks. Duties may include but are not limited to, welding and metal fabricating.

  • Performs duties necessary to support the Parks Division to ensure the proper maintenance, service, and repair of all hand-held power equipment. Responsible for maintaining inventory, maintenance, repair, and replacement logs to maintain equipment as needed.

  • Work together on projects with other City Departments, FMD, Public Infrastructure, and Recreation, and maintain small maintenance equipment for Parks and Recreation.

  • Responsible for preparing for events through constructing and/or deconstructing fencing, barricades, chairs, and stages, as well as "set-up" and "tear-down" tasks.

  • Responsible for inventory control through the appropriate procurement, tracking, care, and maintenance of all tools and equipment necessary to complete projects, assignments, and/or tasks.

  • Assist the Parks Superintendent with the shop's annual required budget and capital outlay. Make recommendations, and procure equipment, materials, and supplies needed for any shop upgrades that are deemed necessary.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Environment:

Duties are performed primarily within a shop and outdoor environment or setting. Possible exposure to electrical and chemical hazards; fumes; vibration; loud and continuous noise; welding; inclement weather; and dust, allergens, and mold.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Required knowledge and experience are normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or GED, ASE, or Welding and Metal Fabrication Certifications, and three (3) to five (5) years work related experience are required.

  • Technical trade or vocational school or training in mechanical and/or automotive repair, and/or welding and metal fabrication technical training, certification, or Associate Degree are preferred.

  • Considerable knowledge of small engine repair and maintenance is required. Small engine repair certification is preferred. Knowledge of proper care and use of all common shop tools; air and hand tools, grinders, saws, gas, and electric welders. Safety-minded approach to using dangerous tools.

  • Hazmat Spill Response Training Certification.

  • Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.

  • Must be able to communicate and present oneself professionally.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical equations to record, track, and/or make necessary purchases and maintenance logs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees' officials, and the general public.

  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, and/or instructions.

  • Ability to perform professional-level work dealing with data, people, and technology that relates to administrative, technical, scientific, engineering, accounting, legal, and managerial.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel) and other work-related computer software and hardware and general office equipment.

  • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Ability to work during weekends and nighttime events and hours of operation.

  • Ability to physically perform under extreme weather conditions.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a Valid Florida Class E driver's license.

  • Must pass applicable pre-employment testing and background and credit checks.

  • Must obtain Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
