As the shop manager, you will provide guidance on techniques and best practices for shop tools and manage inventory, ensuring supplies are available for student projects. You will be expected to troubleshoot technical issues throughout SCAD's wood shops, metal shop, plastic lab, and painting facilities; develop shop procedures; coordinate shop hours and staff schedules; review shop usage statistics to ensure efficient use of personnel and space; and train staff on shop policies, procedures, customer service, and WebCheckout software. Responsibilities include assigning work tasks to staff, aiding on project challenges, enforcing policies, communicating procedural changes, conducing staff meetings, and consulting your supervisor on all special projects and external requests.

In the position of shop manager, you will manage all tours of the space, evaluate the space for needed new equipment and processes, maintain equipment and report major repair needs, and ensure a clean, safe shop environment. You must work with your supervisor on shop operations and budget to communicate any areas of concern, use the work order software to coordinate with physical resource technicians, and foster relationships with material vendors. Responsibilities of the manager include researching materials and vendors to ensure quality price and availability, coordinating deliveries/unloading, tracking inventory data, and demonstrating the safe operation of equipment.

The ideal candidate must be detail oriented and highly observant. They should be capable of coordinating with an environmental health and safety officer to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and, with the SCAD EHS, train staff on first-aid procedures and action protocols for emergencies. Additionally, they should be able to ensure first-aid stations are stocked and administer basic first aid.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of the safe and efficient running of wood, metal, and plastic shop tools, equipment, techniques, and building processes

  • Ability to lead a professional shop environment that upholds industry protocols and safety standards

  • Proficient organization, problem-solving, time management, leadership, and prioritization skills

  • Strong work ethic and high standards in quality of work

  • Experience in managing multiple shifts (seven days and nights/week) of staff

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least three years' experience in related field

  • Experience in an academic environment

  • Proficient computer skills and usage of Adobe and Microsoft software and 3D modeling/graphics programs

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

  • Valid driver's license

Travel Required:

  • Less than 10%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other work days and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
