Provides proactive shift supervision at all times to ensure the plant is operating to maintain safety, environmental, and operational priorities at the optimum production level. Supervises 15-16 operators on shift, responsible for the safety and development of each employee, and the preservation of plant assets.

The Shift Supervisor has the responsibility to inform Environmental, Safety and plant leadership during upset conditions for appropriate communication to local, state, and federal authorities according to applicable laws.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required


  • Must have a good working knowledge of major plant equipment and processes

  • Be able to assess situations quickly and lead others.

  • Minimum of three years experience in EDNF plant operations, or five years experience in outside related plant operations.

  • Good computer skills, including MS Office, Maximo, Konfig, TrainingMine, etc.

  • Fluent in English, oral and written required.

  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to provide clear and direct instructions.

  • Ability to work with people, good listening skills and problem solving skills.

  • Previous supervisory / leadership role preferred.


  • Hold daily shift safety tool box talks.

  • Ensure that facility is operating safely and efficiently.

  • Ensure operators in all areas are performing their required tasks in compliance with company and regulatory requirements for safety, environmental, and QA policies.

  • Active participation and support of plant safety programs and policies.

  • Ensure products are loaded safely and accurately, in accordance with all DOT and QA regulations.

  • Schedule overtime for job vacancies.

  • Provide oversight & active support of operator training.

  • Routine review of operators on their areas of responsibility.

  • Support Unit Coordinators on special requests and projects.

  • Work with EHSS to ensure compliance with safety initiatives and requirements.

  • Regular auditing to ensure that operators safely prepare equipment for service / repair.

  • Review of payroll timecards in ADP, providing comments for all exceptions.

  • Based on collaboration, active investigation and troubleshooting, make sound decisions on plant operation.

  • Assist operators when needed during episodes of plant upsets.

  • Evaluate, with input from operators, any equipment problems that affect the operation of the plant. Determine when emergency maintenance is required and callout the appropriate crafts.


  • Safe plant operations is priority. The development and mentoring of direct reports is key in accomplishing this main job function.

  • Clear concise communication via logbook entries, email, and verbal interaction.

The Technical Groups' primary purpose is to provide technical assistance to the facility. This involves support of the day to day operations and maintenance of the East Dubuque Nitrogen Fertilizer facility. The Technical Group also supports the long-term capital project strategy and manages most large capital projects. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS * BS Engineering or higher, Chemical Engineering preferred. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS * 10 - 15 years of chemical plant operational experience required * Demonstrated leadership ability and experience * Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal regulations that apply to facility required * 5 years supervisory experience required * Experience with capital and operating cost estimating and economic analysis is preferred * Strong mathematical, reasoning, problem solving and an understanding of P&IDs * Fluent in English, oral and written required * Ability to communicate with a diverse group of industry professionals required * Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues and effectively resolve problems within a limited timeframe required * Demonstrated knowledge of business acumen required, including strategies, roles and responsibilities of all departments in similar manufacturing environment * Ability to adjust schedule to meet business needs and address unexpected issues required * Demonstrated leadership in a "Safety" first environment MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES * Support all plant safety, environmental, and quality assurance goals and initiatives. * To be mentor and supervisor to less experienced engineers and technicians. * Facilitate personnel development by participation through outside training sponsored by suppliers, manufacturers and other training facilities. * Investigation of improved methods of plant operation, energy savings and equipment efficiency are priorities of this position. * Assist Operations and Maintenance personnel in solving plant problems. * Promote and facilitate communications with line supervision, which result in improved solutions to problems. * Determine and propose engineering studies to improve plant efficiency and equipment reliability. * Provide mechanical design, procurement, planning, and supervision of capital projects. * Analyzing and evaluating process problems, and performing feasibility studies of plant modifications. * To help maintain accurate, complete and orderly engineering files, drawings and documentation. * Responsible for capital project management * Assist the Purchasing Manager on planning and material procurement for major plant outages. * Participate in the scheduling of outside vendors and contractors. * Enhance the plant safety program by investigating and proposing equipment and installations, which are safe. * Manage and monitor ammonia plant catalyst efficiency. Manage nitric acid plant catalyst pool. * Regularly Communicate with supervisor work progress, concerns and questions.
