General Statement of Duties

Operates an enhanced 911 emergency system in receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for the SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

Distinguishing Features

An employee in this class is responsible for operatingan enhanced 911 emergency system involving a network of complex equipment. Positions are involved in receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls.

Duties include dispatching appropriatelaw enforcementpersonnel and equipment. Duties also include providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. Judgment is required in making decisions during emergencies.

This employee must respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations and be proficient at multi-tasking. Work is performed in a confined space under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences and review of operations.

This position currently works a 12-hour day or night fixed shift (approximately 7a

  • 7p or 7p

  • 7a)including weekends and holidays, with varying days off during the week and every other weekend. Mandatory on-call rotation after completion of training phase. New hires are assigned where needed, shift choice is not guaranteed

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED and one year experience in emergency services communications or graduation from high school or GED and two years experience in a related public safety field. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Applicants selected for hire must meet minimum standards set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Standards and Training Division and undergo an extensive backgrounds process including but not limited to, Criminal background check, Polygraph Examination, and Medical/Psychological/Drug screening conducted by a licensed Physician. Candidate must also successfully complete Basic Telecommunicator School within 1 year of hire.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Answers calls requesting emergency assistance; asks callers appropriate questions in determining proper response needed; verifies and obtains all needed information in order to correctly dispatch the call.

Dispatches law enforcement personnel and equipment;monitors frequency for any additional assistance.

Responds promptly to all mutual aid requests from adjoining counties; monitors calls from a large number of state and local units transmitting messages; Operates a wide range of very complex equipment in performing the functions of the position; maintains auxiliary equipment as required.

Must type quickly and accurately on computer keyboard;

Must have good customer service skills;

Completes all associated paperwork accurately.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Considerable tact and firmness are required in dealing with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Work is performed under general supervision and is subject to direct supervision on new and complex assignments. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school or GED and completion of NC basic law enforcement training (BLET). Must meet standards set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Standards and Training Division. All applicants must successfully pass a rigorous background process to include, but not limited to, criminal records check, polygraph exam, psychological/medical screening, pre-employment physical fitness testing and standardized reading comprehension test. Possession of a valid driver's license. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patrols an assigned area of the County, answers complaints and requests for assistance, investigates crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses, questions suspects, gathers and preserves evidence, makes arrests, testifies in court. Serves various types of civil papers; explains briefly the meaning of papers being served; conducts sale of personal and real property at public auction; ensures proper amount of money is collected. Maintain safety and security for students, staff and administration to ensure the learning environment within the school system; Opens and closes courts at designated times; maintains order in the courtroom; assists defendants in completing affidavits; swears defendants in; seats jury in place when selected; escorts trial jury to jury room when directed by judge; assists and escorts grand jury. Prepares papers for and assists in the transportation of prisoners; escorts prisoners to court and maintains custody there; escorts defendants to clerk's office to pay fines; prepares the necessary papers for defendants ordered into custody by the courts, obtains release orders, searches prisoners and logs property, records arrests. Cooperates with law enforcement personnel of other governmental agencies in making investigations and arrests. Transports prisoners, mental patients, and intoxicated persons to institutions for confinement or treatment; provides transportation in certain emergencies. Provides protective escort; maintains order at public gatherings. May operate speed detection devices or breath analyzer. Prepares and maintains daily reports concerning criminal activity; prepares related reports as requested. Assists in the preparation of crime prevention programs; develops contacts among local community organizations and businesses; conducts seminars. Performs related work as needed.
