The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Sergeant to supervise the work of deputies and support staff assigned to various Sheriff's Office divisions and units.

About the position type:

This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office to apply for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.

This position is internally classified as a Sheriff's Sergeant.

Location and hours:

This position may be assigned to any unit or division within the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and requires flexibility in hours including days, evenings, overnights, on-call, weekends, holidays, and requires being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year. Based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:

  • Supervise the work of deputies and support staff assigned to various Sheriff's Office divisions and units.

  • Train and develop staff; write performance evaluations; handle first-line grievances.

  • Recommend commendations and disciplinary action to superiors.

  • Communicate and interpret administrative and policy directives; administer labor agreements.

  • Participate in the general enforcement of law, prevention of crime or disorder, and criminal investigations.

  • Record activities during assigned shift and inform relief and senior officers of all pertinent details.

  • Study departmental methods and procedures; analyze organizational issues in assignment of functions, lines of authority, and staffing to recommend improvements to administration.

  • Act as division/unit lead in the absence of an administrative superior.

Need to have:

  • Four or more years of approved law enforcement experience as a licensed peace officer.

  • Licensed as a Peace Officer in the state of Minnesota.

  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office serves the county's 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriff's office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.

The Sheriff's Office also runs specialized initiatives like Criminal Information Sharing and Analysis (CISA), Violent Offender Task Force (VOTF), Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Investigation, Community Outreach and Employee Wellness.
