SHERIFF'S OFFICE

Full-time, 40 hours per week, Non-Exempt

Position Summary: Under supervision, performs one or more functions in the following areas: maintaining order and security in the courtroom, serving court processes, criminal identification, investigations, and apprehension of violators of criminal and motor vehicle laws.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs the office and fieldwork necessary to serve and execute writs and other legal papers and documents such as court orders, summonses, subpoenas, writs of attachment, writs of replevin, writs of arrest and indictment, and other documents directed to the Sheriff's Office.

  • Executes bench warrants when issued by the court in the failure of a witness who has been subpoenaed to appear in court and who has failed to obey said subpoena.

  • Executes writs requiring the detention of chattels or goods as directed by the court.

  • Executes complains directed by the Superior Court, County Court, and Chancery Division of the Superior Court.

  • Receives processes and serves court orders and warrants for the extradition of individuals to and from other jurisdictions.

  • Guards prisoners in courtrooms and subdues, restrains, and physically removes unruly individuals from courtrooms.

  • Restrains individuals who make or attempt to attack, assault, or act aggressively against the judge, court personnel, litigants, or other persons appearing in a courtroom or adjacent areas.

  • Conducts investigations of suspected criminal activities and prepares reports of same.

  • May apprehend or arrest suspected offenders in accordance with state statute.

  • Collects monies to satisfy legal debts as ordered by the court.

  • Posts notices of public sales, and records daily writs, papers, and documents processed, served, and executed.

  • Interviews persons for physical descriptions and information for recording on fingerprint cards, criminal records, alias cards, and other required records.

  • Takes fingerprints.

  • May assist with the exchange of information between federal, state, county, and municipal law enforcement authorities by receiving, transmitting, and preparing records and reports using a variety of communication techniques and equipment.

  • Enters, retrieves, and provides information about persons and vehicles to law enforcement agencies via a computer terminal.

  • Testifies in court.

  • May supervise clerical or other employees assigned to an identification unit.

  • Maintains appropriate records and files.

  • Operates a motor vehicle for the transport of prisoners to various locations.

  • Responsible for the care, custody, and security of prisoners being transported to various locations.

  • Ensures that prisoners are properly manacled or otherwise restrained.

  • Locates and apprehends violators of the law.

  • Participates in raids.

  • Collects and preserves evidence and/or various substances and materials obtained in criminal cases.

  • Conducts classes, talks, and lectures on such matters as the use and abuse of illegal substances, forensic topics, or a variety of law enforcement subjects.

  • On assignment, works with the task force as an undercover agent on cases involved in gambling, organized crime, narcotics, and dangerous drugs.

  • Pursues on foot individuals attempting to avoid apprehension which may involve running a long distance and climbing obstacles.

  • Restrains individuals being arrested who may resist strenuously and violently.

  • May assist in control of crowds at various gatherings or in civil disorder control.

  • Quells disturbances.

  • Provides security at public functions where dignitaries may be present.

  • Moves equipment associated with riot control such as tear gas generators, barricades, weapons, ammunition, etc.

  • Operates a variety of communication equipment to provide continuity in communications and proper flow of information between law enforcement and public safety agencies.

  • May perform patrol functions.

  • Directs flow of vehicular traffic during public events or during times of emergency.

  • Provides security at county facilities.

  • Conducts crime scene searches for physical evidence.

  • Conducts search and rescue operations using trained dogs or other methods.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Essential

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. 18 years of age or older. United States citizen. Ability to satisfactorily complete the police training course administered by the Police Training Commission including successful attainment of a level of proficiency in the use of firearms. Ability to physically subdue and restrain violent individuals. A valid Driver's License.

As a prerequisite for appointment, appointees are required to pass a thorough medical and psychological examination. Any psychological, medical, or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of the position, cause the appointee to be a hazard to him/herself or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties will be cause for rejection.

Preferred

Knowledge of court practices and procedures and techniques that would be useful in maintaining order and security in the courtroom. Knowledge of the methods likely to be effective in dealing with varied types of persons. Knowledge of the laws, regulations, standards, policies, techniques, and procedures used in serving legal papers and documents and in conducting criminal investigations and executing warrants. Knowledge of procedures used in the proper methods and procedures for gathering and preserving evidence. Ability to take and maintain a firm and correct stand when controversial matters arise. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems. Computer literate, including the MS Office Suite. Ability to read, write and speak English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
