SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Full-Time, 40 hours per week, Non-Exempt, Grade: B-1
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Primary responsibility of this position is providing security/fire watch for County-owned/leased facilities in the County Complex in Somerville including the Courthouse, Historic Courthouse, Administration Building, Jury Control Center, 40 North Bridge Street, 62 East High Street, and the Parking Deck as well as the exteriors of the Facilities and Services Building and the Somerset County Jail. This service is provided 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, 3 shifts per day. Main responsibilities of the Sheriff's Officer Cadet must be able to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, afternoon shifts, midnight shifts and day shifts. Lead and assist Sheriff Office operations through working with Supervisory uniformed personnel with all aspects of Law Enforcement and daily functions of the Sheriff's Office. Develop para-military style responsibilities for Police Academy achievement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Protects the County Complex from fire, theft, damage, and vandalism.
Directs visitors to their appropriate destination and performs walking tours.
Ensures safety of building(s) by checking all points of entry.
Observes and documents problems along tour route.
Reports and records all required information on activity reports.
Reports and records any out of the ordinary items on an operations report; if circumstances warrant, contacts the on-call Sheriff's Office supervisory or the supervisor on duty.
Controls access to the County Complex by authorizing or refusing admission on and off hours
Recording of the daily Sheriff's Office attendance
Run / operate Sheriff's headquarters front desk operations unsupervised includes answering and routing public and in-house calls, controlling access into headquarters
Operate/instruct/install Sheriff's marked vehicle with MDT's (mobile data terminals)
Instruct and perform safety Officer duties during live sworn personnel medical and deadly force training drills
Responsible for maintenance and record keeping of Sheriff's Office forms and legal documents and vehicle logs
Track and maintain 911 Center calls through the QED software system
Responds to requests of motor vehicle lockouts
Maintain and record Superior Court assignments using spreadsheets
Import and maintain all NJ Title 39 motor vehicle summons in the QED database system
Input daily manpower usage
Document initial complaints against sworn Officers
Dispatch calls and Officers
Assists Officers at the Superior Courthouse with x-ray and person searches
Inspects all equipment entrusted for Sheriff's Officer Cadet use and utilizes it in a professional manner.
Protects and directs personnel and visitors in County-owned/leased facilities in accordance with established emergency protocol and procedures
Maintain and operate Sheriff's Office UTV and trailer
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent. Valid New Jersey Driver License. Ability to read, write and speak English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Ability to receive and carry through orders of law enforcement nature through a supervisory chain of command. Basic Microsoft office skills (Excel , Word, Outlook). Ability to be flexible with shift work assignments.
