The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is looking for qualified and experienced extra help Correctional Officers.

Under general supervision, Correctional Officers are responsible for the custody, safety, security and supervision of incarcerated persons in County correctional facilities. Correctional Officers are also responsible for the care, custody, and control of individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial. The extra help assignment will provide coverage when needed to support County detention facilities.

This is NOT an ENTRY-LEVEL EXTRA HELP POSITION.

Successful candidates will have experience as a Correctional Officer and must possess either:

  • An Adult Corrections Officer Core completion certificate from a certified Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) academy from the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC);

OR

  • A California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR*) Certificate.
  • CDCR academy graduates shall complete an 80-hour Supplemental Core academy within one year of their hiring date.

Former or current Peace Officers are also encouraged to apply!To qualify, you must have a valid California Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) certificate or a BSCC STC Supplemental Core completion certificate.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis.Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

  • Maintain impartiality, transparency, and make accurate observations.

  • Perform repeated strenuous physical exertion.

  • Write complete and accurate reports and correspondence.

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with all people, both orally and in writing.

  • Lead by personal example by interacting professionally and compassionately with community members.

  • Meet State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) medical, physical, and emotional standards for law enforcement personnel.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

Education: Must be a high school graduate or have passed the General Education Development (GED) test or other high school equivalency test approved by CDE or have completed at least 30 college units from an accredited or approved institution to apply.

Licensure/Certification:Possession of a Class C California driver license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must not have been convicted of any felony

  • Refrain from using tobacco products at any time for employees hired by the County after October 1, 2004.
