The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is looking to hire a Sheriff's Captain to direct and supervise work of a major division of the Sheriff's Office.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is dedicated to serving the community with transparency, responsiveness, and compassion.

Location and hours:

This position may be assigned to any division within the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and requires flexibility for a rotating schedule including days, evenings, overnights, on-call, weekends, holidays, and requires being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year.

About the position type:

This is a full-time benefit-earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office to be eligible for this position. Limited duration employees not eligible.

This position is internally classified as a Sheriff's Captain.

In this position, you will:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of law enforcement and support staff assigned to the division.

  • Assist in departmental planning, prepare budget, and creating the division's annual report.

  • Maintain effective public relations.

  • Handle grievances and divisional complaints.

  • Coordinate divisional operations with other law enforcement agencies and county departments.

Need to have:

  • Eight years or more of approved law enforcement experience,

including one or more years of experience as a law enforcement supervisor at the rank of Lieutenant or above.

  • Must be licensed as a Peace Officer by the State of Minnesota.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office serves the county's 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriff's office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.

The Sheriff's Office also runs specialized initiatives like Criminal Information Sharing and Analysis (CISA), Violent Offender Task Force (VOTF), Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Investigation, Community Outreach and Employee Wellness.
