Job Description: Sheet Metal Mechanic IIIs plan, layout, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal parts for the repair and modernization of US Navy vessels. They also utilize equipment including hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment as well as sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls and routers to cut, bend, lock and form, or straighten materials.

Work is performed onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations requiring the ability to work in areas with drafts, noise, and temperature variation.

Must be able to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift up to 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking position. Attention to safety critical.

VIEW JOBS 4/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-16T00:00 Job Summary The Aircraft Mechanic III troubleshoots malfunctions in various aircraft systems, performs general O Level maintenance of the assigned aircraft, have the ability to direct flight line/deck operations, releases aircraft Safe for Flight, and shall possess knowledge of the specialties of the assigned aircraft Propulsion/ Engine/Rotor/Transmission/Drive and Fuel Systems, Airframe/Structural, Landing Gear, Launch/Arresting, Wing/Pylon Fold, Hydraulic Pneumatic, and mechanical Flight Control Systems, Egress and/or Environmental Control Systems, Aviation Life Support Systems (ALSS), Avionics Communication, Aviation/Identification Electronic Countermeasures RADAR and Weapon Control Systems, Power Distribution/Electrical Power, Instruments, Compass, Automatic Flight Control and Lighting Systems, and Aircraft Armament and/or Crew Served Weapon Systems. Essential Responsibilities: * Troubleshoot malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems. * Supervises all repairs and rebuilding of aircraft structures, such as wings and fuselage, and functional components including rigging, surface controls, and plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet gun, and drills. * Reads and interprets manufacturers' and maintenance manuals, OPNAV 4790, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components. * Supervises other mechanics 200-hour, progressive, isochronal, phase, periodic, and other hourly or calendar inspections, examine reciprocating engines for cracked cylinders and oil leaks, and listens to operating engine to detect and diagnose malfunctions, such as sticking or burnt valve. Inspects jet engines and components for cracks, corrosion, foreign object damage, burned areas, distortions, security, warping, wear, and missing segments. * Inspect jet engine turbine blades to detect cracks, distortion, corrosion, burn-out, security, or breaks, tests engine operation, using testing equipment, such as ignition analyzer, compression checker, distributor timer, ammeter, and jet calibration (Jetcal) tester, to locate source of malfunction. * Job duties require that his Mechanic III supervise the repair and replacement of worn or damaged components, such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removing engine from aircraft, using hoist or forklift truck, disassembling and inspecting parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairing or replacing defective engine parts and reassemble and install engine in aircraft. * Supervise the adjustment, repair, or replacement of electrical wiring system and aircraft accessories, perform preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections, perform miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes. * This incumbent supervises the jacking and towing of aircraft, enters in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verifies the work was performed satisfactorily, may service engines and airframe components at line station making repairs, short of overhaul, required to keep aircraft in safe operating condition, may specialize in work, repair and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies, and may specialize in engine repair. * Will work in conjunction with aircraft paint facility repairing aircraft deficiencies discovered while inducted. * Must possess the experience and ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers alike. * Must possess excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule. * Required to make entries in aircraft logs and records, and is responsible for providing guidance and technical expertise to lower level technicians throughout all aircraft modifications and/or maintenance efforts. * Responsible for all administrative tasks assigned for his/her work center. Knowledge of the scope and limitation of various categories of maintenance and their application to the contract unit is required. Must know theory and principles of engine operations; accessories and components; theory of flight; rigging of flight controls; electrical and electronic; pneudraulic; and mechanical principles. Knowledge of sheet metal, properties of materials, fuels, and oils required. Ability to read and write and interpret technical data and special operating instructions is required. An in-depth knowledge of the applicable aircraft is required. A thorough working knowledge of applicable technical publication is required. Good verbal and written skills and leadership ability are required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC) or Rapid Gate Pass. Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks is mandatory. Must have a valid Driver's License.
