This is an Internal Employment Opportunity

The Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences is seeking a Sheep Center Manager. This is a part-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The mission of the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences is to serve current and future communities through education, research, and outreach by providing science-based animal and rangeland information.

Our vision is ecologically, socially, and economically resilient communities and healthy landscapes in synergy with humans, animals, and rangelands for current and future generations.

The purpose of this position is to lead and oversee daily operations of the Sheep Center, teach a sheep production class, and assist with implementation of pasture maintenance practices for department-managed land.

The Sheep Research Center exists to serve the teaching, research, and outreach needs of OSU faculty, staff, and students. The incumbent for this position will lead student employees in the daily operations of the Sheep Center to support these needs. The flock is comprised of approximately 80 maternal ewes, 20 ewe lambs, and 5 rams. The Wilson Farm, home of the OSU Sheep Center, is located 3.5 miles off campus and sits on approximately 300 acres. The main barn is used to house sheep during lambing and throughout the year as needed to protect animals from predation. The feeding system utilizes wooden feeders for grain and wooden bunks for hay. A New Zealand style shearing deck is available and can service several shearers. The back area of the barn houses a working alley with a curved chute leading up. There is also an enclosed lab and small shop in the main barn. A smaller barn (55'x75') is also available to house approximately 40 head. Additional shelter is available to the Sheep Center with two pole barns equipped with a working alley located on campus.

Land managed by the department includes approximately 2,052 acres of fenced pastures across several individual farm units (including Sheep Research Center, Dairy Research Center, Soap Creek and Berry Creek Beef Ranches, Poultry Center, Horse Center, and Hogg Animal Metabolism Building). Responsibilities of this position include planning and implementation of pasture management practices encompassing invasive plant control, irrigation, manure application, planting, mowing, fence maintenance, and grazing management. This position will collaborate with animal farm unit managers, the Director of Livestock Operations, and researchers to recognize and address pasture management needs.
