About Seton College:

Seton College is a new two-year college division of UMSV that will offer an associate’s degree for 100 students that have been historically underserved, who may require additional academic support, and who are motivated for post-secondary success annually beginning in the 2024–25 academic year. The program’s goal is to prepare students to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program or to begin their professional careers. Seton College students will study on the Riverdale Campus of UMSV and have full access to UMSV’s facilities and programs.

Job Description:

Seton College at the University of Mount Saint Vincent invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position of Social Sciences (Psychology preferred). Candidates with cross-disciplinary expertise are encouraged to apply. These are full-time, non-tenure-track positions with a one-year renewable contract, to begin in the Summer of 2024 (August 16th). The teaching load is 24 credits per 12-month period. This position involves teaching, service, and advising Seton College students.

Our priority is to hire an outstanding educator with demonstrated experience using active learning methodologies and knowledge of effective teaching practices for first-generation college students. Master’s degree in a related field is required, a terminal degree is preferred. We seek candidates with genuine interest and expertise in working with first-generation college students from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. Applicants must have teaching experience in the courses listed below, with a demonstrable record of curricular innovation, effective teaching, and advising. Teaching is fully in-person, though one remote workday is permitted during most weeks.

Requirements

  • A doctorate in the subject area is preferred; a Master’s degree is required. 
  • Enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching, experience with active-learning pedagogy, and a willingness to engage students beyond formal classroom experiences. 
  • A willingness to continuously improve their pedagogical skills and an openness to working within a collaborative learning community of other educators and students.
  • Commitment to serving a diverse student body, including underserved, minority, and first-generation college students. 
  • Student centered philosophy that is aligned with the mission of UMSV to educate the whole person.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Pro-active and creative problem solver.
  • Candidates with experience teaching HEOP students are encouraged to apply.
  • Previous successful experience teaching in the following courses is preferred (based on the candidate's area of expertise): Psychology 103: Introductory Psychology

Responsibilities:

  • Teach 24 credits per 12-month period in subject area of expertise using teaching practices that have been shown to be effective for first-generation students.
  • Maintain an engaging and welcoming classroom setting that promotes high standards and inclusivity.
  • Actively contribute to a professional learning community by participating in faculty led workshops that promote pedagogical learning and growth.
  • Be present and available to students on campus during regular hours of operation.
  • Advise Seton college students.
  • Serve on faculty committees.
  • Attend faculty meetings.
  • Some weekends and evenings are required.
