This position is part of the Cost Accounting Analysis & Equipment Management team in the Controller's Office. The successful applicant will participate in the analysis of proposed business plans including revenue and expense projections, rate calculations, actual fiscal results, and compliance with Federal and State regulations and University Service Center policies and procedures. In addition, the position plays an important role in monthly and annual accounting period closing processes and annual report preparation.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within the state of Utah.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with all University Service Centers (SC's) to provide training and guidance to ensure SC rates are compliant with Federal regulations and that the SC's operate according to University policies and procedures.

  • Applies cost accounting skills to understand proposed SC rates and work with departments to develop rates that correctly reflect costs for recovery.

  • Monitors monthly and annual Service Center financial reports focusing on compliance with Federal regulations and University policies and procedures.

  • Performs monthly and annual reconciliations and journal entries for Service Center activities.

  • Participates in annual fiscal year-end closeout processes and annual report preparation and review.

  • Analyzes financial documents, statistical data, historical data and presents to and interprets results for management.

  • Consistently works on highly complex problems requiring independent action and decision making. Must determine best course of action to resolve problems and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Assist with pulling and preparing documentation requested by internal and external auditors.

  • Subject Matter Expert in federal, state, and university regulations and policies affecting sponsored awards.

  • Communicates with central and departmental Finance & Administration Services personnel and academic faculty.

  • Participates and makes substantive contributions in Controller's Office activities.

  • Other assignments and back-up duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six years of relevant experience; OR a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent computer skills, with emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations, and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Self-motivated and able to successfully complete work assignments with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business.

  • Knowledge of federal regulations for grants and contracts.

  • Experience with Banner accounting system.

  • Experience in higher education accounting.
