Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

The 15th District Agricultural Association (DAA), Kern County Fairgrounds, is recruiting to fill three (3) Service Assistant (Maintenance) positions located in Bakersfield, CA.

Under close supervision of the Deputy Manager II, the Service Assistant performs the less difficult maintenance and groundskeeping related duties including acting in the capacity of a crew leader to temporary, unskilled workers when needed, assists Maintenance Workers, conducts janitorial functions, and helps maintain the fairs landscaping. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • When needed, act as a crew leader to temporary, unskilled workers, responsible for keeping facilities, restrooms, buildings, grounds and equipment clean and in good working order.

  • Ensure facilities, restrooms, buildings, grounds and equipment are clean and in good working order.

  • Report any identified facility issues within a timely manner to the appropriate channel.

  • Assist Maintenance Worker staff with carpentry, plumbing, janitorial, electrical and landscaping projects.

  • Help maintain plumbing, including sprinkler systems, faucets and valves; assist with installing temporary water and drain lines for vendors, as needed.

  • Work with electricians in laying temporary power, running conduit and pulling wire.

  • Operate vehicles and construction equipment as needed.

  • Perform janitorial work in buildings, including, sweeping, cleaning, mopping, emptying trash cans, stocking supplies, cleaning picnic tables, benches, restrooms, showers, vehicles, golf carts, tools and other park facilities.

  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the maintenance shop and enclosure.

  • Assist in the overall maintenance of the fair's landscape.

Working Conditions

The work environment will be outdoors and subject to heat, fog, wind and other weather conditions. The worker will utilize a variety of tools, which could include: wrenches, sockets, pry-bars and screwdrivers, hammers, hand-tools, saws, brooms, mops, ladders, paint brushes and rollers, push mowers, weed-eaters, blowers edgers, shovels, and rakes. Performs varied manual tasks and occasionally work weekends, holidays, and odd or irregular hours.
