Sentencing Review Attorney

The Office is seeking an Assistant State's Attorney to work as a sentencing review program prosecutor in the Circuit Court Division, 120 E. Baltimore Street. The ASA will review parole requests, prepare written recommendations on the requests, and appear in court to advocate a reduction in sentence if appropriate.

Duties of the ASA include working on all aspects of the sentencing review program such as initial review of (1) all cases approved for release by the parole board but rejected by the governor, (2) juvenile lifer cases and (3) elderly individuals serving lengthy sentences - over 50 and who have spent more than 15 years in jail and (4) any requests for a sentencing review that meets the criteria as set forth by the unit. The ASA will attend regular status meetings, meet with defense attorneys, prepare written recommendations, and meet with members of the BCSAO executive team to discuss the recommendation. The ASA will participate in off-site trainings, conferences, legislative and related developmental opportunities in furtherance of expansion of the sentence review program.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and will bring a strong desire to work collaboratively. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to approach cases from a balanced perspective to ensure the equitability of each outcome.

The candidate must possess demonstrated computer literacy. The candidate must be familiar with or readily able to become familiar with relevant post trial statutes and case law.

Prior felony victim jury trial is required. Prior criminal defense jury trial experience is a plus.

Salary: $72,033 - $115,100 commensurate with experience, in addition to a competitive benefits package.
