Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. The transformational acquisitions of Concho Resources Inc. and Shell Enterprises LLC's prolific positions in the Delaware and Midland Basins in 2021 further strengthened the company's position in the Permian Basin. At year-end 2023, the company held approximately 1 million total net acres in the Permian Basin.

Description

The Delaware Basin Reservoir Characterization Team is seeking an experienced Senior or Staff Geologist who will report to the Reservoir Characterization Supervisor and be an integral part of the Reservoir Characterization Team, as part of the Permian Subsurface organization. The successful candidate will have experience working unconventional reservoirs and will bring a solid background in clastic and carbonate deepwater deposition, structural geology, seismic interpretation, core data integration and petrophysics. The Senior/Staff Geologist will be responsible for basin-wide mapping and characterization work as well as supporting integrated multidisciplinary subsurface projects between the RC team, asset teams, OBO and GTF. As a senior member of the team, the individual will be responsible for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across the Permian organization, knowledge sharing and maintaining strong communication with global counterparts.

If you are selected for this position, you will be supported by a highly qualified group of geoscience professionals, including other geoscientists and geoscience analysts, as well as geophysicists, petrophysicists and data scientists on the asset teams and the Integrated Geoscience team.

You may be eligible for the voluntary hybrid office work (HOW) program that is designed to provide employees with flexibility while maintaining the advantages of in-person engagement.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Building and maintaining zone-based Regional Earth Models in Petrel (with support from the team)

  • Integration of multiple types of geologic data into output products that represent a holistic geologic understanding of the play(s)

  • Performing geologic analysis including mapping key horizons, fault interpretation, log correlations, formation top prediction, identifying drilling hazards, etc.

  • Supporting secondary and emerging target evaluations, ranking and subsequent recommendation to upper management

  • Creating, updating and ranking geologically similar areas (GSAs) and Play Fairway outlines using key geologic maps and other data

  • Leading and/or supporting additional projects such as A&D efforts, competitor analysis and special technical studies

  • Mentoring less experienced staff including interns and new hires

  • Building clear and impactful presentations to communicate progress and results to leadership at all levels

  • Working closely with teams such as Operated by Others, Business Development and the Asset Teams to provide regional 2D maps of key geological parameters

  • Identifying geologic data quality issues and working to correct them

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Master's degree or higher in Geoscience, Geophysics, or Geology or foreign equivalent

  • 7 or more years of geoscience experience in the oil and gas industry

Preferred:

  • 1 or more years of experience in unconventional resource plays

  • Experience with multidisciplinary integration at various geologic scales (from prospect-level to regional)

  • Proficiency in characterizing clastic-, carbonate- and mudrock-dominated deep water systems

  • Experience working projects with reservoir engineers, data scientists, geophysicists and petrophysicists

  • Proven record of effective collaboration and influence across different teams/organizations

  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals

  • Ability to lead self and others working multiple complex technical projects

  • Drives thoughtful and pragmatic change, encourages innovative thinking and continuous improvement, and models adaptability through resourcefulness, flexibility and positivity

  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right

  • Delivers positive results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
