DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, Health Sciences Advancement (EDOD-HSA), the Health Sciences Advancement Senior Writer is responsible for independently researching and writing, as well as tracking and reporting, on a variety of development strategies that serve the EDOD-HSA and Health Sciences Advancement. Working in collaboration with Advancement Operations and Campaign staff, deans, administration, staff and faculty, the Senior Writer's main responsibilities include strategy summaries, case statements, white papers, PowerPoint presentations and personalized proposals for principal and major gift level prospects in support of the university's fundraising goals.

The incumbent will write or edit a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. The Senior Writer will research, select sources for and conduct interviews, and ensure accuracy of written pieces. Recommend content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives. These projects will range from highly technical scientific projects to marketing pieces for use with a variety of audiences to highly personalized communications.

The Senior Writer will write impact reports to serve Health Sciences Advancement and the university's principal donors. Research, analyze, compile and evaluate data, and produce reports to support principal donor and prospect management activities for effectiveness, reporting results to the EDOD-HSA. Will develop internal procedures to streamline writing requests, content management reviews, and approvals, and provide training to development professionals and assistants on these procedures, and how to retrieve data and draft written fundraising materials such as briefings, proposals, impact reports, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Proven knowledge of the fundamentals of syntax to write clear, concise and compelling fundraising collateral material.

  • Strong knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines. Ability to write in a variety of styles for audiences including individuals, foundations, and corporations,and knowledge of the philanthropic goals and preferences of such organizations.

  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and/or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and/or health sciences.

  • Thorough research and fact verification skills. Ability to research material related to and write on a wide variety of health related subjects that may include cardiovascular, cancer, ophthalmology, medical research, healthcare, community outreach, education and other health related issues.

  • Strong knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and/or web production. Proven ability and knowledge of writing for multimedia presentations and content for web.

  • Solid interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills. Ability to interview and work with diverse group of individuals who would provide the basis for materials to be developed.

  • Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to successfully carry out and track multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Understanding of philosophy of quality service and group process, with aptitude for working as part of a team. Ability to encourage and develop a collaborative and positive environment; ability to foster UCSD's Principles of Community.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to grasp and integrate into practice university gift policy and management procedures. Ability to understand and work with financial information.

  • A high degree of integrity, dependability, and use of sound judgment with a strong work ethic. Skill to maintain confidentiality.

DESCRIPTION Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, Annual Giving, the Senior Development Writer will be responsible for researching, analyzing and developing a broad variety of donor communications with the goal of increasing philanthropic support for UC San Diego. Oversees all written communications in support of Annual Giving, collaborates with graphic designer(s) on designed pieces, and directs other communications team members to support fundraising efforts for UC San Diego's strategic priorities. Collaborates with Advancement and campus leadership, development officers, administrators and faculty to research and create compelling, donor-specific content to assist Advancement leaders and development officers in meeting the university's philanthropic goals. This position works closely with Annual Giving colleagues to write, edit and design donor-centric proposals ($250K to $100M+), case statements, letters, stewardship reports, concept/white papers, correspondence, appeals, speeches, talking points, and special items that incorporate key development and campaign messages for targeted audiences. Works directly with internal stakeholders to develop content strategy that weaves the donor's philanthropic intentions together with campus/department/program funding priorities and the university's mission. As a key strategic partner to Advancement leadership, serves as a conduit between high-level academics and the lay individual/donor and must be able to analyze, interpret, translate, synthesize, and compose information from a variety of fields using advanced communication and marketing concepts. Understands and is able to apply principles of target marketing to development communications. Researches, writes and/or edits high-level communications, publications, and/or reports with complex or sensitive subject matter to audiences that are either broad or highly influential. Requires subject-matter expertise and an in-depth understanding of the audience and the communication strategies that will best serve the institution with that audience. Work is of considerable difficulty and may require political acumen and sensitivity.
