This position participates directly in web application development efforts in order to create, maintain, and improve the functionality, relevance, and security of University web resources. This position works through all phases of the web application development lifecycle from initial consulting and brainstorming to design and development to testing and production integration. This position applies user interaction model concepts and approaches to maximize the communication of and access to University information.

Core Duties

  • Design, implement, and deploy web-based applications and websites from initial design and architecture through development, test, and deployment.

  • Implement and maintain content management systems, including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and creation of University-specific modules.

  • Evaluate third-party modules for functionality, accessibility, security, and maintainability.

  • Perform selected website administration duties as assigned. Ensure web server and site technical performance.

  • Create web pages and tools for University websites using core technologies. Create and/or modify clean, well-structured, search engine optimization-friendly documented code.

  • Provide technical expertise in front- and back-end web development. Support web infrastructure by providing end-user support, applications maintenance, product evaluation, back-end development, and internal management tools.

  • Interpret website design and layout visually in a creative, contemporary style and fully integrated manner. Ensure high quality and consistent look and feel across multiple devices and browsers.

  • Work with site architects to develop and document functional specifications based on requirements gathered from stakeholders. Support the implementation of life cycle.

  • Help develop and deploy upgrade/migration plans for existing content management system as needed.

  • Participates directly in Java/JSP based web application development efforts to improve the functionality and relevance of University web resources.

  • Build dynamic, secure database-driven web applications and portlets in Java or other programming languages as appropriate.

  • Assist other application developers and administrators with maintenance and support of pre-developed custom web applications, particularly as they integrate to the portal.

  • Serve as primary administrator of portal for students, staff, and faculty.

  • Provide weekly status updates and prepare technical reports and briefings concerning projects and tools managed by the position.

  • Respond to requests for enhancements, upgrades, or problem fixes as prioritized by the community.

  • May supervise Student Web Developers. Supervisory responsibilities include providing valuable learning experiences, hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment.

  • Build custom web applications that require complex integration with the ERP or other systems as needed; ensuring data security compliance, utilization of standard tools and development languages, and performance of all applications impacted.

  • Automate system components where possible utilizing advanced toolsets and development skills.

  • Communicate with leadership in departments outside of IS regarding the status of projects and any ongoing troubleshooting.

Education & Experience

  • Required: solid and demonstrated technical understanding of data-driven applications, services, and systems.

  • Required: minimum 2 years developing web applications and working directly with enterprise web services solutions.

  • Preferred: bachelor's degree in business, computer science, or communication-related studies.

  • Preferred: prior experience working with Git and Puppet.

  • Or equivalent education and/or experience.

  • All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone.

  • Frequently: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push and pull objects (generally, computer equipment and peripherals) that can weigh up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.

  • Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.

  • Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.

Working Conditions

  • Hours of employment: may require working flexible, irregular, and/or longer hours, including early mornings, evenings, nights, overnight hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary. This includes the ability to serve as an on-call lead in rotation.
