Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Operations Officer, the Senior Vice President, Operations Excellence will be an inspiring leader who connects with individuals from the C-Suite to the shop floor and also provides matrix leadership to Operations functions across all lines of business including quarry, cement, ready-mix concrete and asphalt operations.

The role is responsible for strategic leadership of Summit Material's Operations Excellence team and implementation framework, functional leadership of Shared Technical Service Team, and Capital Expenditure management. This role is a seasoned operations leader with a strong track record of driving operational improvement through structure methods, building disciplined but agile management systems, and providing leadership in safety, sustainability, and environmental leadership.

The SVP, Operations Excellence will drive Operations performance and profitability improvement through continuous improvement methods and will partner with the Segment Presidents identify and prioritize strategic initiatives and will lead the implementation the Summit Materials Operational Excellence Framework across the organization. The Shared Technical Service Team will drive functional excellence and provide centralized coordination of technical services which cut across lines of business and segments such as reserve exploration, mine planning, maintenance management systems, and Capital Expenditure planning and management, and overall financial benefits from operational excellence initiatives.

The SVP, Operations Excellence reports on overall corporate progress on initiatives and financial benefits to the Senior Leadership Team on a monthly basis.

This is a full-time position requiring approximately 60% to 70% travel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and drive strategic improvement priorities aligned to Summit's Elevate strategy to achieve improved operational performance, profitability and return on invested capital.

  • Partner with business segment presidents to translate into strategic priorities into segment level improvement.

  • Direct management of the Operations Excellence Team consisting of segment-level team leaders and operationally deployed experts in continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, TPM and specific technical disciplines.

  • Matrix leadership of Operations Management VPs to ensure alignment and delivery of Operational Improvement goals.

  • Determine optimal resourcing for Shared Technical Services, balancing outsourcing and insourcing of technical disciplines.

  • Define and lead management processes for long-term capital expenditure planning, and annual review and execution.

  • Implement the Summit Materials Operational Excellence Framework across production operations within the segment.

  • Mentor direct and downline reports in Operations Excellence methods, safety, and sustainability leadership, change management and matrix leadership.

  • Guide the process of development of Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and targets to ensure delivery of results.

  • Facilitate senior leadership team sessions to develop Operational Excellence strategies.

  • Cross-business communication of projects, events, and best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A strategic operations leader with 20+ years of operations leadership and at least 10 years of experience in manufacturing operations improvement methods, such as Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and TQM. Credible certification or equivalent credentials in one or more methods required.

  • Strong business acumen with comprehensive understanding of manufacturing cost and performance management.

  • Detail-orientated with excellent organizational and communications skills.

  • Strong manufacturing process and technical understanding; operations leadership experience highly preferred.

  • Excellent leadership skills and organizational abilities. Strong influencing skills with demonstrated ability to lead in a matrixed organization.

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.

  • High level of integrity and commitment to overall team results.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites.
