POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chief of Ophthalmology and the President and serving as a member of the senior executive team, the Senior Vice President serves as the department's administrative leader for all matters related to clinical, research, education and general administration for department operations and its specialty service areas.

ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS:

1.Leads with conviction, based on organizational values and beliefs, toward achievement of mission and goals, and influences change at all levels of the organization. Functions as an integral member of the executive leadership team.

2.As a member of the executive leadership team, works collaboratively to develop the vision and strategy for the organization that anticipates changes. Prioritizes tasks and goals and integrates new information into plans to support organizational priorities.

3.Guides, inspires, motivates, and leads staff, serving as a role model and champion for service excellence. Appropriately delegates responsibility and authority to managers while maintaining accountability for results. Intentionally grows, develops and mentors staff to become leaders within the organization.

4.In all areas (patient care, research and education), strategizes and drives process improvements focused on innovative operational models designed to improve services, outcomes, patient throughput and safety and the use of technology in the workplace to streamline operations, facilitate communications, and optimize work processes. Ensures and fosters collaboration within a highly matrixed team environment. Develops and manages complex information and brings clarity to ambiguous situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.Department Operations, including programmatic and strategic planning for MEE and HMS department:

a. Leads the evaluation, development, and implementation of strategies for the growth, management, and integration of clinical services throughout the organization and across hospital and the Mass General Brigham (MGB) network service settings, including MEE, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). Works with management staff and representatives from other departments to evaluate, initiate and implement systems and procedures and revises as necessary to improve and maximize efficiency.

b. Leads the clinical operations and the financial performance of the department's ambulatory practices, including procedure areas, testing and ancillary services, and oversees multi-specialty inpatient service and emergency practices.

c. Works to support and coordinate care across all MGB affiliates.

d. Serves as senior administrative liaison to the MGH, BWH, and other affiliated institutions.

e. Responsible for ensuring efficient and effective charge capture and billing processes in place for clinical operations to ensure timely/maximized collections and cash collection procedures. Analyzes data and monitors performance relative to projections.

f. Ensures department billing compliance. Serves as principal department liaison to Compliance Office.

g. Provides strategic insight relative to succession planning for key faculty and administrative positions.

2.Faculty:

a. Oversees department recruitment and credentialing administrative processes, ensuring the highest performance of processing all faculty/fellow appointments and related activities.

b. Manages the overall compensation plan for department faculty, and in conjunction with the Chief communicates various aspects of compensation plan to faculty. Develops and tracks recruitment and/or retention packages for department faculty recruitment.

3.Research:

a. Leads the department's research administration infrastructure. Oversees development and monitoring of research project budgets in collaboration with research administrators, grants managers and principal investigators and ensures that research administrators and investigators are conversant with MGB and institutional research policies and procedures, including appropriate application for and maintenance of necessary IRB or IACUC approvals, protection of intellectual property and compliance with MGB and HMS policies on Conflict of Interest.

b. Works with MEE research leaders, departmental research operations, service chiefs and principal investigators to identify and support development of appropriate areas of research, including assistance with related recruitments and acquisition of required resources.

4.Education and Training:

a. Responsible for the administrative leadership of the department's residency, sub-specialty and research fellowship, and Harvard Medical School education programs, ensuring compliance with the requirements for accreditation by the ACGME/Residency Review Committee and other accrediting organizations.

b. Oversees financial management of training programs, including implementing and ensuring compliance with billing activities as applicable.

c. Maintains and fosters relationships with academic leaders of those institutions where our trainees rotate, and those institutions whose trainees rotate to other organizational areas.

5.Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience

a. Develops and monitors departmental indicators set forth to meet service excellence and quality goals. Initiates service improvement efforts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Proven track record developing and motivating managers and staff to achieve strategic objectives and maintain accountability. Experience gaining credibility and partnering effectively with medical staff to achieve desired facility-specific and organizational outcomes. Proven experience and track record of success in leading the operations for a large, complex enterprise.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualified candidate would have an MBA, MPH or other comparable master's degree, with 8-10 years related experience, preferably in an academic medical center or related industry. The qualified candidate should also have the ability to gain credibility and trust with multiple layers of a complex organization; successful track record of front line management; excellent interpersonal and listening skills; open, honest, objective manner; ability to interact effectively with all levels of institutional leaders; and the ability to bring diverse groups to work together as a team.
