Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory

Job Summary

This position supervises technicians responsible for work in the area of veterinary microbiology under the auspices of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The person in this position oversees and performs duties within the section, including aerobic and anaerobic bacterial culture plate evaluation and susceptibility testing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Bench work

  • Evaluate aerobic and anerobic bacterial culture plates, isolate pathogens, and perform bacterial identification & susceptibility testing.

  • Back-up of Leptaspira MAT test, anaerobic culture, fungal culture, and shipping of Infectious Substances (Class A & B - Certified).

  • Administration:

  • Supervise technicians responsible for work in the area of veterinary diagnostic microbiology under the leadership of the faculty section head and director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

  • Assure proper staffing for the laboratory and assign staff to the meet the needs of the laboratory.

  • Maintain inventory and place orders for both VDL Microbiology and Food Safety sections, including media, supplies, reagents, etc.

  • Oversee QA/QC of media, identification systems and antimicrobial susceptibility panels. Maintains records of above for AAVLD accreditation.

  • Responsible for maintenance contracts for the VDL microbiology section. Represent Microbiology section on the VDL computer committee. Represent Microbiology on the VDL QA/QC committee. Responsible for lab Q-Pulse records, assisting staff with Q-Pulse, VADDS (New LIMS - Core One For Labs) and other IT issues.

  • Principle contacts for the laboratory, fielding most of the phone calls from case coordinators, receiving, office, clients, residents, and students relative to clinical cases.

  • Oversee data and software management for Sensititre, MIDAS, and Biomic. Enter and retrieve computerized data (Excel, PowerPoint, Photo-Adobe Workshop).)

  • Other Duties as Assigned

Allergies to hay, straw or animal dander may cause discomfort based on the location within the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology or a related field. A minimum of five years of work experience in diagnostic microbiology, including experience with diagnostic microbiology techniques. Training in microbiology, virology, biochemistry or a related life sciences field required.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of Science degree in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology or a related field.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 7/5/2024. The minimum starting salary is $60,000 annually and is competitive and commensurate with applicant's experience and qualifications. The University of Illinois offers a complete benefits package.
