Overview

The Vehicle Performance Engineer provides technical and analytical support to all Product Platfoms on component selection and strategy for vehicle performance, fuel economy and GHG. Lead and/or support projects that deliver the product roadmap for performance targets: these can include integration and projection of new engine hardware/software, aerodynamics, chassis components and fluids selection. Develop and maintain technical relationships with critical component suppliers. Analyze and summarize competitive landscape, technology developments, customer usage and regulatory influences. Develop both analytical and physical test procedures to assess vehicle performance metrics. Serves as a central resource within the company to understand and maintain the fuel economy attributes. Strong communication skills and ability to lead discussions is desired.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Works closely with program and engineering management to translate and incorporate customer vehicle-level performance and configuration requirements into cross-functional integration and design targets.

  • Takes a proactive, leadership role by acting as a customer advocate and technical 'referee' for cross-functional attribute and design efforts.

  • Performs and/or coordinates performance trade-off studies to meet or define vehicle performance requirements.

  • Interacts effectively across the organization: program management, customers, application engineering, design teams, manufacturing teams, and senior management.

  • Carries out analysis of current and future products based on engineering and customer data.

Position Purpose and Requirements

Provides technical and analytical support to Product Development Engineering. May provide direction and guidance to less experienced team members. Refers problems that cannot be resolved to the next level. Serves as a central resource with design, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing as the product(s) move to production and distribution. Involvement may last throughout all stages of a product's lifecycle including modifications, upgrades and maintenance of the product or product line.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 5 years experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 3 years experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)
  • Matlab experience a must

  • Experience with Tableau preferred

  • Excellent presentation skills and verbal/written communication skills.
