As a Senior Underwriter at The Hartford, your primary role will be to underwrite and actively pursue new business, manage an existing book of renewal business and servicing the needs of our brokerage partners on an account by account basis. The Senior Underwriter will serve as a key member of the Financial & Executive Liability local region, reporting directly to the Central Region Underwriting Manager of Executive Liability Commercial Team. The Executive Liability Commercial Team focuses on management liability and fidelity products for publicly traded and large private (Revenues > $500M) commercial accounts. This Senior Underwriter role will be focused on the East Region, which includes Boston south along the east coast to Atlanta. Products include primary and excess directors' & officers' liability, employment practices liability, fiduciary liability and fidelity.
Territory Analysis and Planning:
Comprehends strategy; identifies brokers who can begin or further partner with The Hartford in support of these strategies.
Develops and maintains effective relationships with internal business partners and external brokers and clients. Negotiates appropriate policy terms and conditions with brokers.
In collaboration with management, develops a pipeline of prospective accounts and persistently pursues them.
Has keen insight into competitors' strengths, weaknesses and strategies to capitalize on the ability to write profitable business.
Asks probing questions and listens carefully to uncover the customer's circumstances, needs, motivations and concerns.
Articulates and sells The Hartford's value proposition, including its distribution, geographic, products and strategies, etc.
Prepares for each account meeting and demonstrates that preparation with thoughtful questions.
Demonstrates ability to properly analyze, select and recommend target business.
Demonstrates skill in analysis of loss and risk information, recognition of "red flags" and inconsistencies in information, appropriate evaluation and efficiency in determining and obtaining "need to know" information.
Knows the Hartford Financial Products risk appetite and proactively communicates it to brokers.
Knowledgeable in various coverage forms and policy language; appropriately utilizes forms and exclusions; effectively articulates features/benefits of The Hartford products and services; accurately communicates to brokers regarding language requests; drafts language changes for legal review.
Three to five years of industry experience.
Public company management liability underwriting experience preferred.
A minimum of two years of financial analysis experience.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn internal account management systems.
Able to travel two to three times per quarter within the assigned region (Midwest and West Coast).
BS/BA degree. Advanced degree or CPCU, RPLU, IIA or CIC is a plus.
