Are you interested in developing multimodal solutions through implementation of large capital projects, like bus rapid transit? Consider the City of Raleigh Senior Transportation Planner opportunity! Work on a team in-charge of implementing large capital infrastructure projects and collaborating with multi-departmental work efforts to provide multimodal solutions and transportation/mobility options for the community.

The City of Raleigh Transportation Department-Transit Division has two (2) openings for motivated senior planner to join the team. This position will be responsible for various aspects of transportation/transit planning related to the implementation of Wake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) program and associated projects. The senior planner will serve as a project manager and will be responsible for engaging with various stakeholders and the public on planning issues and will coordinate with various City departments to advance capital projects.

Multi-Departmental Coordination Includes:

  • Working with Planning and Development Department on Transit-Oriented Development and Station Area Planning.

  • Collaborating within divisions of Transportation Department on developing first-mile and last-mile solutions to enhance multimodal access to transit facilities.

  • Managing preliminary design and final design of large capital projects with Engineering Services Department.

  • Working with Sustainability Office on innovative solutions to include solar technology and other considerations.

  • Collaborating with Community Engagement Office to received feedback and educate the community about upcoming projects.

  • Collaborating with Raleigh Parks and Recreation to enhance multimodal access to parks facilities, including greenways.

  • Working with Raleigh Arts to include art components within large capital projects.

  • Working with external stakeholders and regional partners to continue education, outreach and gather feedback to enhance capital projects.

As assigned, this position may serve as lead staff on various planning initiatives and be responsible for coordination of complex planning projects.   • Provides program and/or project management, planning, technical, and analytical support in area of assignment.

  • Monitors project activities and ensures compliance with applicable policies, plans, requirements, and processes.

  • Performs research of best practices, industry standards and community needs.

  • Coordinates, attends, and facilitates meetings; prepares agendas and technical materials; reviews activity status, timelines, and resource allocation; monitors and evaluates consultant work; prioritizes and schedules work and activities.

  • Prepares and presents planning and technical program information to City Council, Boards, Commissions, and/or internal and external stakeholders and groups.

  • Identifies, develops, implements, and maintains processes and practices that encourage, support, and promote effective, comprehensive, and meaningful citizen engagement.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in planning or public administration or field directly related to assignment and five years of related professional planning experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in urban planning, transportation planning, public administration or field directly related to assignment and two years of related professional planning experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.

  • Modern office technology.

  • Coordinating deadlines, prioritizing work demands and assigning/monitoring work performed (based on assignment).

  • Providing project/program management, organization and logistics coordination.

  • Overseeing the implementation and adherence to quality assurance and standards.

  • Researching industry trends, solutions and best practices.

  • Gathering data, analyzing findings and applying logic and reason.

  • Interpreting, monitoring and reporting financial information and statistics.

  • Coordinating deadlines and prioritizing competing demands.

  • Authoring and preparing original reports, technical documents and presentations.

  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards (based on assignment).

  • Providing customer service.

  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work:

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Working Conditions:

Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
