Department Overview

OHSU is Oregon's only public academic health center. We are a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and southwest Washington. The purpose of this position is to deliver instructor- led trainings for new and experienced Environmental Services (EVS) employees. This position creates and brings into effect strategies to improve departmental effectiveness through curriculum and training. The Trainer will also be responsible coordinating training logistics and developing the design of training and training evaluation materials. The Senior Trainer independently develops, maintains and delivers introductory, intermediate, and advanced training courses to learners and designs and customizes materials for both instructor-led classes and online training for EVS. This position also develops and deploys EVS Leadership Team training in coordination with the EVS director.

Function/Duties of Position

Coordinate and Deliver Training

  • Instructs classes in formal instructor-led training sessions in the use of business or clinical applications and provides post-class support to learners.

  • Plans scheduling of training courses and arranges for training rooms and equipment.

  • The Senior Trainer independently develops, maintains and delivers introductory, intermediate, and advanced training courses to learners and designs and customizes materials for both instructor-led classes and online training for EVS.

  • Collaborates with various departments/organizations within and outside OHSU to develop training topics.

  • Creates online training modules for EVS.

  • Instructs classes in formal instructor-led training sessions.

  • Maintains training records for all EVS employees through Compass LMS.

  • Develops, delivers, and manages EVS new employee orientation.

  • Develops and delivers EVS Leadership Team training as directed.

  • Develops and delivers front line staff training as directed.

  • Develops and delivers Strategic Plan for employee engagement, in coordination with EVS Director

  • Provides training in patient care areas as well as the classroom

  • Delivers specific training programs for EVS department, such as (but not limited to): Safety in Motion, CHEST, CSCT, and other approved programs.

  • Develop and make sure training meets instructional objectives

  • Coordinate approved trainings and arrange for training rooms and equipment.

  • Consults with Managers/Supervisors and other members of Leadership Team to determine training needs and coaching.

Designs and development of courses and training material

  • Consults and coordinate with departments and individuals to determine EVS training needs, and customize curriculum based on their needs.

  • Uses web development tools to develop, implement and maintain on- line courses on the web.

  • Manages regular curriculum review yearly for all training materials.

  • Designs and writes training course lesson plan and course material.

  • Evaluates EVS course content and training materials to ensure staff learn key objectives and concepts.

  • Develops, administers, and reviews basic course evaluations that measure learner reactions to and satisfaction with a class and adjust training accordingly.

  • Conduct training needs assessment. This includes interviewing subject matter experts, conducting job analysis, and various methods of research.

  • Develops complex needs assessment instruments that measures increases in learner's skills, knowledge, or attitude, as well as use of skills, knowledge, or attitude in the everyday environment of the learner.

  • Develops tools that can be used to assess return on investment that has resulted from training, training such as increased productivity, efficiency, and quality.

  • Coordinate, develop, and assist in the delivery of monthly EVS All- Staff Meetings.

  • Coordinates meetings with leadership team to discuss future projects and training needs

  • Follows state, county, and OHSU guidelines to ensure department-wide consistency of training to prepare adults for a basic level of training within the department.

Development of Leadership

  • Develop and lead essential training for Leadership Team as directed.

  • Source appropriate materials and products for coaching opportunities.

  • Keeps current with industry by reading technological literature and attending seminars/conferences, as appropriate.

  • Develops tools that can be used to assess return on investment that has resulted from training, training such as increased productivity, efficiency, and quality.

  • Develops complex needs assessment instruments that measures increases in learner's skills, knowledge, or attitude, as well as use of skills, knowledge, or attitude in the everyday environment of the learner.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience; AND

  • 3 years experience providing training, course design and web development including online courses, instructional design, technical writing, and understanding of theories, tools and methods of adult learning; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience; AND

  • Possesses strong presentation skills or public speaking experience to communicate information and ideas clearly verbally and in writing based on the needs of the audience.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Strong Presentation skills or public speaking experience

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written; editing proofing and visual layout/design skills; ability to work with diverse individuals and teams.

  • Ability to monitor complex processes within policies and guidelines.

  • Strong detail orientation with ability to make decisions based on big picture priorities and considerations.

  • Ability to prioritize projects and support multiple department functions simultaneously.

  • Ability to assess, design, deploy, and edit training materials.

  • Ability to give and receive feedback in a constructive manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field (Education, Writing, Communication, MBA)
  • 5 years Adult Training experience (Classroom and Online Class Development) Healthcare systems experience.
  • CMIP, CHEST Trainer, CSCT Trainer, CHESP

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Macintosh and PC operating systems, MS Office Suite

  • Learning Management System (Compass or similar system)

  • Knowledge of Environmental Services and Infection Prevention and Control Practices Training Methodologies.

Additional Details

  • Office / Floor location.

  • Must be willing to move with laptop and/or mobile device.

  • Other conditions to vary on project assigned.

  • Able to work flexible hours and days based on need of trainings and department.

  • 80% of time spent walking or standing, frequent use of computers, pagers, phones, and other equipment as necessary. Ability to stand continuously up to 4 hours a day. Ability to communicate clearly with a diverse group to meet hospital goals while managing multiple projects simultaneously. Must be able to lift 35 pounds. Must be willing to work with sharps, blood and bodily fluid exposure risk, and perform environmental services and/or floor care technician tasks in the course of training.
